Hello everyone,

I'm from the Philippines and have a concern regarding retaking medical exam.

I took the medical exam in January 2020 and applied for my visa online through SDS application. My status in GC Key for my medical exam was only updated 2 days ago! (May 10, 2021)

Before it was updated, I already scheduled another medical exam because it's been more than 1 year (to be taken on June 4, 2021). I've also been hearing stories of people being turned away at the airport when the IRCC looks into the validity of your medical exam (even if you already have final approval and a student visa). It has happened in India and also Filipinos flying depending on their route to Canada.

Here's my question:
If you retake the medical exam without IRCC's request to retake it and upload this through the webform, will your status in GC Key change from "You have passed the medical exam" to being under review again?

I'm still waiting for final approval so I wouldn't want my status to change, however given the news of people being turned away I will take a new medical anyway just to be sure.

Is anyone experiencing this same situation?

Thank you!

Better to be safe than sorry, kabayan. Before the pandemic, the only thing that mattered was that your IELTS or medical are both valid at the time of application. But lately, there have been cases where students were turned away at PoE.

I’m not sure. When I came here in 2018, CBSA only asked for my passport and letter of enrolment. Although I have all my papers with me (medical, IELTS, police clearance, GIC, etc.), the CBSA officer did not ask for those. But this was during pre-pandemic times. From what I have been reading from the forum from recent arrivals, there have been cases of rejection at the POE. Anecdotal as they are, I think it’s best to play it safe and have all your papers valid. This is just my opinion, though. Other veteran members might give you a more definitive answers.

Hi! My partner and I’s medical exams expired last February too but we didn’t right away retake them not until a letter from the IRCC asked us to retake our medicals. I don’t remember any of our statuses changing. Counterfoil’s still valid and medical result’s still the same. I also don’t think they’re going to change anything on our statuses even if our medicals expired already. We just need to retake our medicals the soonest.

This is what happened to my case though. Not sure with the others.

Hi, thanks for the feedback. This was very helpful! May I ask how long it took IRCC to ask you to retake your medical when it expired in February? In my case it had expired already in January but status was just approved last week.

We both received the letter last month. My partner’s request came through an email while mine came from our CIC account. I’m just wondering why you haven’t received yours yet since you did yours earlier than ours. It’s a good thing that you’ve already managed to book an appointment as early as now. I heard St. Luke’s and IOM’s already fully booked. :(

Anyway, just be patient though. IRCC would send the request to you soon. :)

I see. Yes I'm quite puzzled too, possibly my medical was approved and the status did not change until now. I also applied for SDS so not sure if the processing was different for the medical. Yes all the schedules this month are full, I'm scheduled for June 4 so I'll be taking it already even if IRCC has not requested to retake it because I plan to leave in June or July. I will reupload my medical through the webform, this is how others are doing theirs.

We applied through regular stream though but I guess, whether you applied via SDS or regular stream, the process is the same. While some SDS applicants are still waiting for their approval up until now, some regular applications receive their approval earlier than expected. Oh well, covid changed everything.

I also sent our e-medical to IRCC Webform just to be sure and received their acknowledgement last week. I hope you get yours soon and that everything goes smoothly with your application! :)
