When is a temporary resident visa or travel visa, needed and what are the benefits?

My USA permanent resident girlfriend, has visited me in Canada by land, 4 times and I have visited her by land, 3 times in the US and we have never gotten a travel visa or temporary resident visa. We simply show our passport and PR card and we cross.

What is the need or benefit of a Temporary Resident Visa or travel visa?

There are none. Your gf benefits because she doesn't need to apply for a visa that's about it other than that you have the exactly the same visitor status once you enter.
