It is not only about the day you apply for citizenship. You will have to maintain your eligibility until you take the oath. If you have plans to return to Canada then it's fine else it may cause issues with your application.
I'm a permanent resident. I thought the days that they count for eligibility are for 5 years from when you apply?

Yes, that is correct but you will still have to maintain that till the day of oath. Further, whenever you return to Canada as a PR, you will have to prove your PR eligibility also.

Oh yes, well I plan to come back soon, and before my days go out of course but wanted to apply asap to get the ball rolling from here

Honestly your big challenge will be to fill out the calculator while you are still outside, you cannot apply without the physical presence calculator form.

Agreed, and since you are absent for more than six months, you will need a PCC from the foreign country/countries as well.

Hmm. Why dont you share the reference from IRCC website. This would definitely help fella knowing IRCC position and planning a trip to Canada.

Thanks for your help.

Requirements summary
All applicants for a grant of citizenship under subsection 5(1) of the Citizenship Act must
  • make an application for Canadian citizenship;
  • be a permanent resident of Canada and have no unfulfilled conditions relating to that status;
  • meet residency requirements which include physical presence and income tax filing;
  • if under the age of 55 at the date of application, have an adequate knowledge of one of Canada’s official languages;
  • if under the age of 55 at the date application, demonstrate in one of Canada’s official languages an adequate knowledge of Canada and of the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship;
  • not be prohibited under section 21 or 22 of the Citizenship Act;
  • not be under removal order and not subject of a declaration by the Governor in Council made pursuant to section 20.
Note: Any of these requirements can be assessed at any point (e.g., hearings or interviews) during the processing of an application for the grant of citizenship.

Yup, no such requirement the applicant has to be in Canada at the time of application.

But this thread is a cautionary tale about getting a removal order due to unfulfilled PR/residency status during the citizenship application.

On their website it does say:

When calculating your time in Canada:

  • only the five (5) years immediately before the date of your application are taken into account;

You are confusing two things, yes for citizenship only 5 years immediately before the date of your application are taken into account. Once you apply, you still need to be a PR until you take your oath, you still need to meet your permanent residency obligations all the way to oath. If at anytime during your citizenship application process you didn't meet your RO, your citizenship application will be compromised.

it does not matter, the card could be valid, but you should not meet RO if you still stay aboard
Oh I know you need to stay 730 days to renew it but I’m applying for my citizenship now and just hoping to get my application in sooner because I can’t get back to Canada until June for work
