Application/profile updated -- false hope or progress?

In the past month or so I've been relentlessly checking my online profile; this afternoon I got a surprise, after more than a year, the current status changed from Submitted to Application/profile updated. Hugely disappointingly, when I clicked to check the status, there was nothing new at all, still pending the background check. And when I went back to the main page, it said "Submitted" again.

Then I checked several times later in the afternoon, and still "Submitted", but just now in the evening, I got the updated status again (and captured a screenshot), but still nothing seems to have changed.

Do you guys know if this could be a sign that some immigration officer is actually making some progress, or just a random system glitch? Has anyone else seen this?

From my observation, two close GUs could mean criminality passed and security passed, but mostly happened in two days. If it was a glitch, many ppl would have had the same thing. So could mean something positive, but it will take some time from all stages passed to actually approved and from approved to receive actual COPR.

Thanks. Well, since Friday nothing changed and last night there was a third of these "ghost" updates: current status said there was an update, but the profile looked the same.

About a month ago I made a request under the Privacy Act (which I believe is the same as ordering GCSM notes?) I wonder if the false updates are related to that, rather than actual progress made on my case.

ATIP requests do not trigger ghost updates on your application.
it sounds like your file has been picked up and is moving, which is often a good sign. You are probably close to a decision. You can call IRCC (if that option is available to you) to find out in detail, the current status of your stages

Hi, same thing happened to me this morning. I logged in, and my application showed "Application/Profile updated". When I tried to click into my profile, I got the "503 Bad Gateway error" but when I pressed back, my profile still showed as "updated". When I logged back in, status had changed to "submitted" and I could access my profile, but there were no apparent changes.
Called IRCC but the call centre agent confirmed criminality is still in progress, and security hadn't started. I am hoping instead the Ghost Update means that an officer at least opened my file....

I tried to call yesterday but couldn't for the life of me get an agent (I did call during their work hours). The menu selections to be able to talk to a person used to be 3-4-1-0 (I used it successfully in the past), but the menu changed. I called 4-5 times and tried different menu options, but it was always a useless automated answer at the end. Any idea how to get them on the phone?

I always call at exactly 8 AM (local time) and it can be "hit-or-miss" about getting through. Either you'll get through straight away, or there is a call back feature for IRCC applicants if you are in Canada. Hope this helps!!

Well, I've got the fourth "update" in a week, this time there was an actual update, but a lame one: "You passed the medical exam". I already had this status back in February 2020, but over the course of the year it changed to "you do not need a medical exam", until today.

So I wonder, could it be that all four updates that I've seen recently were just the officer looking at the medical records? Mine shouldn't be complicated, as far as I know.

When did you do your medical? If it was last year (Feb 2020), as they are only valid for a year (if memory serves) this might have been the notification that they basically extended your previous medical results? Re-validated them or whatever it is they do! Either way, I would take that as maybe a potential good sign, means someone is looking at your file!

If my memory serves, they are valid as long they are less than a year old when the application is submitted. IRCC slowness is not our fault and it would have been outrageous if we were asked to renew any document (other than passport) that has expired because they were taking too long. My medical is from Jan. 2020 so was "fresh" when I submitted.

So after getting GCMS I can explain those ghost updates:
March 19 afternoon: admissibility passed
March 19 evening: med extension requested
On March 25 I saw an update that was not a ghost one, online it showed "You passed the medical exam", but what I see in the GCMS is that it's eligibility+criminality+medical and application approved. But online I see eligibility and background check under review and final decision still pending ("Your application is in progress").

I don't understand why the online profile only shows the medical pass but not the others, and what exactly I'm waiting for now. There is a COPR document number, can I do anything with it?
