I am single but I want to marry before I go, so wouldn't be taking my wife with me but will have to apply after I land in Canada.

yes you can marry before leaving for canada, make sure you submit a webform to IRCC regarding your change in marital status from single to married, if your student permit application is still in process as of your marriage date. If your student permit gets approved before your marriage date then no need, just take a copy of marriage certificate while travelling to Canada if the border offices asks for it.
