Which one is better? Extending visitor visa or grandparent sponsoring?

My MIL came to visit us for a year, but cannot travel back due to the lock downs. She has multiple entry visa and I think she can stay two years max. Now we are contemplating whether we should ask for an extension, when the 2 years expire or is it better to go for sponsorship. Flagpoling is not really an option with the boarder closure.

Can you please share if you have any insight on this?

Sponsoring through parent / grandparent sponsorship requires that you be selected through the lottery which is far from guaranteed.

Assuming you and your wife meet the income requirement, your wife should enter the lottery once it opens later this year. If she is selected, then you can decide whether you sponsor your MIL or not.

Until your wife is selected through the lottery, the only option is an extension.

Thank you for your response. Much appreciated and it makes perfect sense.

As far as I know, there is no rule against submitting applications for both. The visitor extension is most important, but you should be able to apply for sponsorship at the same time as well.

Many of the lockdowns are loosening so travel should be possible to many countries soon enough if not already. Is your MIL on a TRV or supervisa?

Supervisa, her country is a small island and just entered another lockdown no planes in or out so we don’t know when she can return. I know I Should be optimistic, but even with the vaccines out I consider travel as health risk at this point...it’d be best if she could stay put till some more time.

She still has a year before her 1 year is finished so there is plenty of time for lockdowns to be lifted.
