Hi, I was already accepted as a permanent resident. I had applied for refugee status, so refugee board has my passport, as my application was approved I was wondering when and how I will get my passport back. Do I have to ask for it? Do I have to request it? Or just they will send it to me automatically? Does anyone know about it? Thanks in advance!!

You have to write a letter to CIC explaining why you need your passport returned to you. Usually it is not returned. If your reasons are important/essential to have it back, it will be returned but there is no guarantee.

Lol it’s first time I hear that a passport is not returned. Obviously, they have to return it. My point is what should I do to get it.

you will get your passport back the the day you become a landed immigrant (permanent resident).
The officer will return your passport to you as well as any other document that was taking or seized from your when you entered Canada.
I am here in Canada, I have the CoPR and the new SIN number, just waiting for physical PR card ( I already applied) but I don’t know if they sent it to me automatically or I have to send a letter or pick it up.

You gotta go to CBSA with your COPR letter to get your passport back

If you claimed refugee status, you don’t get your passport back. They don’t have to give it back to you. You have to ask for it and explain why with a positive decision you need it back. Why do you need it?

Man, you seems don’t know about it. I know a lot of refugees an all of them have received their passport back.
I already have the PR, I am just asking if I have to wait for it or do a letter.

While you are in a claimant they seize the passport, but after you have either removed or accepted for whatever be the mean, you will have your passport back.
Anyway, thanks for the numbers.

Right. You don’t get it back. You have to ask for it.

I just want to understand something. If they seize your passport and you get PR, why they don’t return them? Do you think they hold thousands of passports in office? Noo,Eventually they send the passport back because people got residence. They don’t need to hold a passport for no reason.

That doesn’t make sense. I have heard a lot of people receive it by mail

Hi I am in the same situation. If you get any update please let me know. Normally they returned it at the landing interview but with online process I have no idea what to do. I am thinking of using the return of siezed documents form. (although it says the application should be made within 60 days of document siezure.) Dont pay attention to people like Naturgrl. The internet is filled with thousands of people who have no idea what they are talking about, havnt gone through the process you are going through, but cant keep their mouth shut and not give misinformation or opinions. Just dont pay attention.

Yes bro, you are right. Now it is supposed they will send it with along the PR card. If I know something I will let you know.
There are a lot of people like Naturgl in this forum, they misinform people. Maybe they are jealous because it doesn’t make sense to write something as he did. Anyways, that’s why there are more sources and good people that can inform well.

technically naturgrl isn't wrong. lately, I've seen you have to request your seized documents from CBSA or wherever you made your claim.. I don't think they automatically give them anymore especially if you are a protected person or are the main applicant in a claim. I got Pr this year and also received my pr card 3 weeks ago. no mention of my passport from them.. or you can call ircc or cbsa ask them the procedure might be different now.

On the flip side what doesn’t make sense are people who fled their country , presumably going to Canada for protection, now wanting back a passport that represents the same country they are fleeing from.
