Can someone on visit visa convert to open work permit?

Hi there,

Researching for my brother. Is it possible for him to travel to Canada to visit visa and then convert to open work permit, as a spouse of his wife, who'd travel to Canada as a student?

Learnt that he'll need to wait for months before applying for open work permit as student's dependent so exploring to see if he could travel along with her as a visitor first and then convert the visa to open work permit at a later point, from within Canada

There is no conversion, he would have to apply the same as he would if he applied from outside Canada and not be able to work until/if it is granted. You can check the processing times on IRCC website.

He also needs written authorization to travel since I assume he already has his visitor visa.

How is he eligible for an open work permit if on a visitor visa?

He can try but TRV and OWP and not guaranteed for spouses of international students. He would need special authorization to travel.

Hello,

The possibility is not entirely ruled out, especially as a spouse of an International student. Most spouse of International students apply for VV to come to Canada and apply for SOWP within Canada.

However the case may be, the formality of demonstrating good home ties and financial sufficiency may still be strongly advised.
