Study Permit Refusal - Suggestion required

Hi All,

I had applied for a study permit for Jan intake 2021 and have received a refusal. Mentioning all required details below along with what's stated in GCMS notes. Please help me with suggestions as I will be applying again with corrective measures soon.

Applied from Delhi under SDS category for 1 yr Marketing Management Graduate Certificate Program.
10th CBSE 2010 - 7.4 CGPA
12th CBSE 2012 - 84% (Best four)
Graduation in English from DU 61%, completed in 2016
Post Grad Diploma (1 Yr), 2016-17 in Advertising & Marketing Communication
Since 2017, working in the advertising industry.


GCMS notes mention: Previous education/employment experience is inconsistent with current education goals; I am not satisfied that the motivation to pursue this particular program in Canada, at this point in time is reasonable; see loa/transcripts.

I am therefore not satisfied that the applicant is a bonafide student in Canada who will leave Canada by end of the period authorized for their stay.

Upon seeing this, I understand that changing the course might help. Please suggest if applying again with 1 yr graduate certificate program will affect visa approval chances? Also what kind, of course, should I apply for?

Looking forward to helpful suggestions.

You have already done a PG diploma and a Graduate certificate you are trying to pursue is similar/lower than what you have already studied. You will have to pursue a higher level of education(think masters) and align them with your career goals. It all needs to match and make sense to the VO.

Well a masters degree is becoming expensive for me. Thus wanted to apply for 1 yr program. What are the chances of a visa if I apply to a program that helps in my career goals and is skill-enhancing like project management?

Visa officer see no legitimate reason for you to pursue this course. It is likely that you're trying to do the course so you can immigrate to Canada and stay, which will violate your temporary permit application.
Therefore you're not a genuine student and so your study permit is refused.

Like I said, you just want the visa, you're not a genuine applicant. This confirms the visa officer's suspicion of you that you're not a bona fide student.

That makes up 99% of the Study Permit applicants. They want the visa of course so they can have more options in staying longer in Canada (work permit, PR, etc...). The 1% is probably bored rich kids who want to explore Canada for the heck of it.

You just have to present a very strong application to get the Study Permit. Be assertive in your SOP.

Of course most students want to remain in Canada. There must be another reason for rejecting applicants.

Maybe something like this: I don't think you are the right student we are looking to admit. Rejection reasons apart from problems with the law or financial means border on the absurd!

I guess they're trying to make sure that you'll actually get to Canada, study and follow the legal process to get a permanent residence, not just get to Canada and stay illegal. Just guessing.

Apply for master's. As you have already done one PG diploma, adding another diploma to your application might turn out to be risky. I understand masters are very expensive therefore try to identify those universities where master's programs cost less than others. maybe start from Memorial University, UPIE, UNB, Regina etc... If you are able to manage admission in any university, then banks in India will be able to give to education loans up to 7.5 lakh without any collateral. If you have ITR and good credit history, you may also get a collateral-free education loan of more amount. Probably work on a strategy on how you can sail it through.

Hi all,
I have got a refusal 2nd time for the visa application.

Quick Background:
Employment: Software Developer for 2.8 years
Graduation: Btech in Information Technology
Applied for: Cloud Computing Certificate Program at Loyalist College
1st Application on 12th Nov 2020
1st Application type: Non-SDS
Rejection for 1st Application: 29th Nov 2020
2nd Application on 18th Dec 2020
2nd Application type: SDS
Rejection for 2nd Application: 22nd Mar 2021
IELTS: overall 6.5 - not less than 6 in any section


Reason for refusal:

• I am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay, as stipulated in subsection 216(1) of the IRPR, based on your purpose of visit.
• Your proposed studies are not reasonable in light of: your qualifications, previous studies, missing mark sheets, academic record, level of establishment, language abilities, financial ability, and your future prospects and plans.

I have received the 1st GCMS notes today, although I applied on 2nd December. Notes -

I am waiting for the 2nd GCMS (applied on 22nd Mar).

That is exactly the reason. However, the way it is executed does not make sense. I fail to understand why a person who is stable, has good experience would decide to stay illegally in Canada. People move there for better lifestyle and not to make it miserable by not having a legal status. Rejections they are doing is mostly based on the nationality of the person. They should take a call on case to case basis and use some logic and not just because they have a box to tick.

i think they want to make sure that the applicant has the right mindset and the right motive for wanting to study in Canada. yes, you may be eligible for the PGWP after graduation, but that should not be the primary reason for you wanting to study there. and that's why the way the SOP is written is extremely important. you must be sure what IRCC is looking for and know how to express that in writing.

What were your IELTS, GRE scores? Did u apply for Masters or certificate program?
Also, did you apply under SDS - paid 1st year tuition fees plus GIC

Program applied - Cloud Computing Certificate Program at Loyalist College

The questions is why do you need to come to Canada for a Cloud Computing Certificate program (and spend thousands of dollars) if you have a B.Tech and been a software developer for a few years. How will this certificate given you career advancement in your home country. Assume a Cloud Computing program is available in your home country or online. That is what the VO is asking.
