Family sponsorship for previously undisclosed child

A little bit of background information:
My husband is from Mexico and I am a Canadian citizen. He immigrated to Canada under spousal sponsorship last year, before the pandemic. He is now a permanent resident. All is good in that regard.

However, he has a son (now 5 y.o.) from a previous relationship that he never recognized legally (there's no father in the child's birth certificate, only mother) and he never really had much contact with the boy or the mother. He says it was a one-night thing only, and the mother didn't want him involved with the child anyway.

Now, the mother of the child is in a precarious financial situation and wants my husband to take care of the child, even suggesting that the boy lives with him here in Canada. I'm open to the idea and so is my husband. The problem is that the child was never mentioned as a dependant child of my husband (accompanying or not accompanying) so we don't know if he (or we) can sponsor him under family reunification or what other option there is.

My husband will go to Mexico soon (when it's safe to do so) and modify the child's birth certificate to legally become the child's father.

The question is:

Can my husband sponsor his son under the family reunification stream given the circumstances?

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

He can try applying under the pilot program for excluded dependents. Suggest you spend some time reading through the below.
