Do I need to get bed and mattress fumigated if taking with me to Canada from the USA. Someone told me it was an old rule and now fumigation not needed but then someone-else said it is still there. Checking to see if anyone knows if the fumigation requirement for beds and mattresses still exist? Thank you.

Still applies.

Used or second-hand mattresses

You cannot import used or second-hand mattresses into Canada without a certificate that verifies the mattresses have been cleaned and fumigated in the country of export. A letter, or any other document that clearly demonstrates that this requirement has been met, is acceptable if it is signed by a person qualified in cleaning and fumigating. Refer to D9-1-7, Used or Second-Hand Mattresses and Materials Therefrom.

Yes and no!

Yes the rule does still apply, but it does NOT apply to settlers goods (i.e. it applies to commercially imported matresses, although it is hard to think there is much of a trade in second hand mattresses!).

Useful stuff explaining the CBSA wording here:

https://britishexpats.com/wiki/Mattress_Fumigation-Canada

We imported all 3 of our mattresses from the UK without fumigation and clearly declared them as such on good accompanying with no problem whatever.

Thank you for the clarification.

For the benefit of anyone with same confusion, I also called CBSA and heard it from the horse's mouth that I do not need to do fumigation for my mattress.

Hi, I reached out to CBSA and I found out that its not needed if you are currently using the mattress. It comes under some section of the code. But again I would recommend you to call CBSA and confirm. TIA

I'm planning to move to windsor next week. Can you please let me know if you were able to import the mattress without fumigation?

Yes we moved with mattress in march…nobody checked it..we thought that let’s take a risk as we had to throw mattress in usa so instead of throwing there we brought it thinking if custom will throw it or we can take it inside Canada…so u can also take risk…
