Having a job is not a requirement for citizenship...as long as you have maintained your PR status, you should be good...below are the requirements:
  • be a permanent resident
  • have lived in Canada for 3 out of the last 5 years (at least 1,095 days)
  • have filed your taxes
  • pass a citizenship test
  • prove your language skills

When you fill in the citizenship forms, you will be asked about your time in Canada...you have to fill in a table to list all your jobs (if you had any) and education...if you were unemployed, you just mention that...easy peasy...

During the interview, which is immediately after you pass the test, the officer might ask you about your job and education, which is normal...

Good luck!

I would suggest you to apply for the citizenship as with current covid situation there is a huge backlog and building up.

By the time you get a test invite after your application who knows it may be another 15-18 months assuming by then IRCC would have come out with a solution to conduct test or covid subsides significantly causing the normal citizenship testing to come back into effect. In this scenario at least your file will be in queue and in you might be working by then too.

So at the time of your interview you can tell the officer about your then employment and will have no issue whatsoever.

If you are still unemployed it does not impact the citizenship application as others mentioned above.

Cheers!
