Help to fill IMM5524E(PRTD) -- I received my COPR, I did not spent even a day in Canada

hello all,
I am currently in canada on my open workpermit which is vaild until next year. and i apply for permanent residence n March 2020. My application must be in the final stage right now and expecting COPR any time soon.
However, due to undeniable circumstances, i have to travel to home country for 3-4 weeks.

My query is should i inform CIC before my travel date about this journey as i am not sure what should i show them in order to enter in canada if i will receive my COPR before my journey or while i am out of canada. I am aware that WP will not be valid if i receive my COPR during that time. DID anyone faced the same situation before and how long it takes now a days for PRTD process?? any insights @canuck78 @sumitkamboj88

Hi , you are travelling to your home with the intention to return back after 3-4 weeks. I don't think you need to inform them as your plan is to return back. If you receive the COPR meanwhile than you can write to them informing that you are out for Canada for urgency. you can apply for PRTD once PR and out of Canada. I applied for PRTD in June it took 18 days for approval but processing timeline are not guaranteed in this covid-19 situations. Also note that once PRTD is approved you need to get your passport stamped from Visa application centre(VAC) and VAC are still closed in some countries so plan considering all the factors impacted by COVID-19.

thank you @sumitkamboj88 for the info. What if i will get COPR before my travel date while i am here in Canada as PRTD can be applied when you are outside of canada right?!! So, can we travel with COPR or not?

No, you can not enter Canada just with COPR. To travel out of Canada you just need travel document for your destination. it has nothing to do with COPR.

I had applied for PR CEC-inland and received COPR today. I am a temporary resident of Canada on work permit. I came back for a vacation before COVID-19 but could not return back to Canada because of travel restrictions. My work permit has been expired and I received my COPR. In order to travel back to Canada, I need a permanent resident travel document.

There is a requirement to prove the residency obligation but I have not spent even a day in Canada after getting COPR. What should I fill in IMM5524E form in following points?

15 - Time spent in Canada - This is for the time I spent in Canada since I became PR but I have not spent a day. should I leave this blank??
19- Humanitarian and Compassionate Grounds - Should I leave this blank or should provide some explanation that why I am out of Canada?


To prove my temporary residance in Canada I have many documents, eg. bank statement, CRA notice of assessment, Mobile Bill, Gas bill. Should I submit these with my PRTD application?

I left it blank and explained in a letter that I have not spend even a day with PR status in Canada as I received my PR when I was stuck out of Canada because of a pandemic.

Hi , Can you please give some info on what happens after PRTD is approved, do we need to submit the passport for visa stamping and if yes then is VFS accepting passport application for stamping visa?

Hello Sumit,
I have seen your post. My situation also similar to yours..I am on Open work permit, currently I am in India. I am traveling back to canada in february. I have applied PR under CEC category, My PR application is now showing 100%, But still under processing. What are steps that are need to follow once I receive the confirmation.
1.What is the processing time to get PR travel document?
2.What are the documents that I need to submit?

I received my CoPR in September recently but wont be having my PR card anytime soon and am currently in Canada.

Hi, my husband is in this same situation. He got his COPR in July and hasn't received his PR card yet and he is in India right now and he wants to come to Canada but we were thinking of applying for the PRTD application. Did you get yours? how long did it take?
We the PRTD is denied due to residence obligation,, does it have a negative effect on the application?
