My husband and I are US citizens. We just received our COPR with an expiration date in October 2021. We are not in a position to move to Canada until 2022, so we were planning on a soft landing, which has been complicated by the pandemic, of course. Another complicating factor is that I am now pregnant. This baby is due in July 2021 and, of course, was not part of our Permanent Residence application. We would definitely prefer to have the baby in the US, in our current city.

Does anyone have advice on our best course of action here? I know that this is a complicated case, primarily due to circumstances of our own creation.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, firstly, it is not that complicated situation. Many people have faced this situation before.

Since your COPR will expire in October, 2021 and your due date is in July, 2021, you can wait till the baby is born and then inform IRCC to add the baby in your application. You will be given 30 days to submit documents for the baby and once you submit them, the baby will be added to your PR Application. You will have to return your COPR as new COPRs will be issued to you and then you can travel together with your baby.

If you land in Canada, before the baby is born, then you will have to sponsor the child later on. So better option is to wait till July, 2021, add the baby to you application, get your new COPR and then complete the landing.

Thanks! This makes a lot of sense.
