Hi All,

I am looking to apply to the Business Administration in Holland College in 2021. I completed my LLB in India in 2009 and presently I am looking to study at business administration at Holland College now because of its fee affordability. I intend to come back and start my law firm after studying the course.

My query is:

1. Is there an issue in getting study permit because of the study gap?

2. Will it impact my chances of getting a study permit because Holland College is not a university?

3. Are there any other more affordable institutes for business administration in Canada?

Best regards,

The answer to the first two questions is both yes. It would be better to go for a master's degree at a public university. Although you can explain that you have every intent to return to India, they will still assume anyone applying for a college course at your age is an aspiring PR. They will wonder why you cannot study in India.

Hi Primaprime,

Thank you for your reply. Is the reason that the course offered is practical skills oriented and more affordable compared to other colleges and universities not a good enough reason? I am not getting such a course even in India at such affordable fee. And this Holland College is not a private college but a community college and a DLI. Moreover, I have my practice and clientele in India. So I will need to come back.

Also, could you please suggest some affordable public universities in Canada for business administration where there is no need for GMAT?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not the judge of what reasons are or aren't good enough. It's up to whichever visa officer gets your file. You can state that the course is relevant to your career goals in your letter of explanation and show evidence of business ownership, but of course if you already have your practice set up, why do you need to study in Canada?

Visa officers see so many Indian applicants going for college diplomas after a lengthy study gap that their default assumption will likely be that your true goal is PR. You're going to have to work hard to overcome that presumption. Just because a school is a public school or a DLI doesn't guarantee approval.

A master's program is always going to look more relevant to your professional development at your age and with your experience. Most will want the GMAT or GRE and will cost at least $50,000.

Dear Primaprime,

Your inputs are really helpful.

Regarding why I want to study at this stage of my career, the reason is that though I have the necessary skillset as a lawyer, I don't have the skills of a businessman, like being a good hr manager, pitching to corporate clients, marketing services, etc., for which I feel the need of training. In the past 10 years, I have trained myself in the legal side of my trade, but now I feel the need to train myself for the business side, so as to achieve my full potential.

To answer why I want to study in Canada, the reasons are:

1. The course fee is affordable compared to colleges in US, Europe or even India
2. Studying in a developed country will definitely expose me to a better practical experience and learning in a multi cultural environment, which is way better than studying in India, where I have been since my birth. Studying here would just help me academically but studying in a country like Canada would help me to hone my skills in a multicultural setting, which would be better than studying in my home country.
3. The course structure and subjects offered at the college appear to be just what I want to learn
4. Masters course has a lot of subjects which will be of no use to me in any way for my career progression. However the course offered at Holland College is such that it is relevant to the skills that I am looking to gain.
5. Earning a master's degree enhances a candidate's employability. However, I am not looking for employment either in India or anywhere else. I am doing this course to enhance my practical business skills.

I understand that it all depends on the assigned VO's understanding and every case is determined on a case to case basis. My intention to ask is to understand the process of granting the permit better, so as to be in a position to address the gaps in my application.

Would be forever grateful for your kind inputs.

Thank you.

That's a good list you've created; obviously you should be putting those in your letter of explanation. The idea that it is somehow cheaper to study in Canada than in India is probably not believable (tuition aside, the cost of living is much higher in Canada). However, if you are explicit that you want a more practical program as opposed to a master's because you want to return to your business in India, and about the benefits of Canadian education (multiculturalism, etc.) then you could stand a chance of approval.

For your proof of funds, include documents showing business ownership. Who will be taking care of it while you are away? Do you have family in Canada and have you previously gotten visas to travel to the US, Europe, etc.?

If you want any further help editing your letter then you can also feel free to PM me.

I would love to run my SoP through you, if it's okay with you.

Despite your explanation, it is very hard to believe that given your background, an unknown college in Prince Edward Island will help you set up your business back home. What is more transparent is that your aim is choosing this degree at a cheap and remote school is your attempt at PR through study. VO may also see through it
