Not being academically sound? Should I even apply for Masters in Canada?

Hello,

From India, planning on going to Canada for further studies, Masters in Electronics.
I have already done Bachelors and Masters in Computer Applications.

However, my problem is that I am not that academically sound. I have really good expertise of the fields I work in, better than the students who graduated top of my class, but I never got good marks in my academics.

10th - 56.76%
12th - 49.83%
B.C.A - 49.50%
M.C.A. - 60.18%
Currently 1 year of experience in both IT (Programming) and Electronics. I basically have enough knowledge about electronics until its Bachelors.

My query is that, with such low scores in academics, should I even apply for a Masters in Canada?

I really want to learn electronics, but will getting into good universities be difficult?

And if I do not get admitted into a top level university, will it be difficult to get a job after my studies? Cause I heard it's really difficult to get a job if I don't graduate from a top level university.

Looking for your suggestions.

Kind Regards,
Lolcocks.

Yes, will be difficult with your grades. Can you do GRE? And yes, you are right about job prospects
It's already too late for me to apply for the February intake, so I have some time on my hands till the September 2021 intake. I could get a GRE done till then.

But will getting a GRE improve my prospects of getting into a good university? Or will the bad academics always hang behind me?

Also, none of the Electronics Degrees require GRE. Not sure if they would consider it even if I had one.

The minimum is b or b+ in your last 2 years. What is your GPA for last 2 years? And you should email admissions office to see if they will consider GRE. It is your only option

My CGPA for my entire masters is 6.77 out of 10 with a grade of B+. (Which is 2.71 on a 4.0 GPA scale I believe)
My CGPA for only the last two years of my Masters is 7.14 out of 10. (Which is 2.86 on a 4.0 GPA scale I believe)

I see some universities have different grading system for foreign universities. Not sure if top universities allow the same.

Okay thanks, I will email them to ask about consideration of GRE.

One questions though, when emailing them, should I be straight forward and mention my low scores in academics or should I try to avoid mentioning that and straight up ask if they consider GRE?

EDIT:
Also, after I complete my Masters in Electronics, I will be having double Masters. One in computer applications and one in electronics.
Will that be helpful in getting jobs in Canada?

I mean that's up to you but I would be direct. No point in hiding that information, it is what it is. On your 2nd point, having 2 Master's is good but won't necessarily help that much. In Canada, having a Master's has become so common it's lost its shine. However, having a Canadian Master's will definitely help employers verify your skills.

I cannot thank you enough for all this information. Thank you so much!

Secondly, how can I figure out which universities are remote and which are top rated universities? Coming from India, I have no clue about the geography of Canada. Or there is there no way around this, I will straight up have to do my research on each and every university that I have short listed?

And finally, since you are a Master's student as well, do you know how prevalent is the electronics and IT industry in Canada?

Someone could tell you about universities but it is worth doing your own research. IT industry is great. If you are any type of programmer/developer you will have no problem finding a job.

I mean yeah, if I want something done perfectly, I will have to do it myself. So it's better I do my own research rather than relying on others.

My masters from India is purely from a programmer / developer stand point. I hope the same will be of at least some use to land a job in Canada (considering I will also have a Canadian Degree in electronics, since almost every employer is looking for a Canadian degree).

My end goal is to create a few electronic products which literally no one has made in the field of Industrial Automation. Which is why I am opting for a electronics masters.
Unfortunately, I cannot start my own company unless and until I get a Permanent Residency. I can, but I will have a less than 50% share, which kind of puts me at a risk.

I can only wait and see what happens. Hopefully, I will be creating jobs in Canada 5 to 7 years down the line. :)

Thank you for all your help, tapperb. You have been of great help!

Thank you. :)

I just remembered another question, thinking long term.

Let's say I get a PGWP for three years, I work for one year and I apply for PR.

That leaves me two years to get a PR while I work in Canada.

If I do not get a PR in those two years, I will have to apply for a standard Work Permit. How easy are those to get?

I hear employers do not sponsor Work Permits and I will have to apply by my own and are quite difficult to get even if I do have a job.

Is it true?

Hello @tapperb,

Sorry for poking you again. I have another question with continuation to this thread.

Let's say that even if I do manage to get an invite from an university, will there be an obstacle of the VISA officer rejecting me for low marks? Or is getting a study permit easier once I get accepted by an university?

I don't have any concerns regarding other stuff, I can easily prove that I will be coming back. I have a good reason to explain why I am opting for a second master's in electronics. I have literally 0 ties to Canada. I have lived my entire life in my home city and only traveled outside India for tourism on multiple occasions. My English is quite good, I will get a good score in IELTS which is in a couple of days.

The only thing that worries me is my low academics. :(

Kind regards,
Lolcocks.

You can still be rejected by the visa officer even if the university accepts you.

Damn!

Okay one final question, kind of a stupid one as I am unaware of the process. For my study permit application, do I need to submit all my education credentials or only my bachelor's and master's?
