Outland sponsorship currently in Canada - change of address during the application process

Hello,

My common-law partner and I are currently filling out our outland application while both residing in Canada. In our outland application, we will use our Canadian mailing address (common Canadian address for the past 5 years). During the application process, however, I (the principal applicant) will go to Europe for a year to do my internship. The sponsor will remain in the same residence during this time. Should I change my address of residence in my IRCC account/application? Or since we're sending an outland application - which allows traveling outside Canada - I can keep our Canadian mailing address? In the latter case, what happens with landing if my PR is approved and delivered to our mailing address in Canada while I am still outside Canada?

Any advice would be appreciated.

You won’t be able to change your address in your account once you’ve sent in your application as it only allows you to do so if you’re changing it to another Canadian address or a US address.

My husband and I were the same as we filed Outland from within Canada and he went back to New Zealand after is Visa expired. Once our application was in the system we sent them a webform to inform them of the change to his New Zealand address.

It was a bit of a mess as they didn’t change it by the time he got his PPR, (which happened quickly for us) which had instructions for Canada and he needed instructions for New Zealand. We ended up having to email the Ottawa office directly to have them send a new PPR with instructions for sending his papers to Auckland, New Zealand.

My best advice would be to have the address changed and be in contact with them as soon as your application is in progress to save yourself a lot of trouble.

That's very helpful - thanks so much for sharing this.

Should we perhaps include a letter/note in our application, stating the upcoming change of residence/workplace for the PA - for transparency - or will this information just complicate things at this stage?

To my understanding, your husband went back to New Zealand, where he has citizenship? The other issue is that my internship job will be in Norway and my citizenship is Greek - although I don't need a visa to work or live in Norway as an EU citizen. Depending on how long the application process will take, I might be living in another country for more than 6 months. Not sure if this further complicates things in terms of police certificates/supporting docs. Any idea?

Thanks again for your time!

It never hurts to add a note in, so I don’t see why not. We kind of wished we had done that after the fact!

Yes, my husband is a New Zealand citizen. It shouldn’t matter whether you’re a citizen of the country you’re working in as long as you keep IRCC informed of your most current address. They will send your PPR with instructions for you to send the required paperwork to the closest visa office to your address.

If you do intend to be working anywhere for more than six months it will likely require a police certificate. If it’s after you’ve sent your application in and IRCC is aware you’ve been living in another country for more than six months they will likely request one, which you would have to send later.

I’m not entirely sure as my husband only needed a New Zealand one (and they did the Canadian one on his behalf) but usually if they require more documents they’ll send a request for additional documents. It’s also country specific for whether they’re added to the initial package you send in so I would research the countries in particular where you know you’ll be living. It never hurts to send one via webform if you’re unsure once you reach the sixth month point and your application is already in process.

Hopefully someone with a similar situation will be able to give a more specific answer!
