I follow I respected immigration consultant and she said that this question is valid but under no circumstances are pgwp extended.
This is something out of the ordinary, if you read the IRCC page regarding covid-19 that is where they mention about the possibility of extending your temporary permits.

I think it's actually likely they'll provide some extensions.

I have reas the special measures but ot says only if eligible. So it means that the rules are not changed. I don't think it is ever likely to extend PGWP. Unless they have heart and accept the EI period as work experience. I am just so frustrated. I was so close. sigh...

@Aysherman , when you say you were temporarily laid off- do you have a job to go back to when things go back to normal? I am asking because if that is the case, when you reach 1 year and request a job letter, it shouldn't give a cutoff in March-because you not working wasnt your fault. If you are still technically employed by the company, I dont see why there should be an issue

I do have a job and yes I will go back to work right aftet they are open. A very good posotion with 3 major roles and yes they are going to give me a letter for a year but my record is in CRA simce I am receiving EI. I am not sure how my it will be interpreted by IRCC though.
I hope they consider that.

Your EI application shouldn't have any bearing on your PR app. These are exceptional circumstances. You literally cannot work and you are still employed to the company-it's not like the business closed or you were fired.

Thank you . What you're saying makes sense in a logical way. I hope IRCC is as fair and logical as you are.
Thx for the ray of hope you gave me tonight.

Hello,
Did you receive an answer from IRCC about getting an extension of your PGWP? What are you going to do in order to remain in Canada?

IRCC said this on Twitter
"To stay in Canada as a visitor after your PGWP expires, apply to extend your stay. Apply at least 30 days before your permit expires: https://t.co/wbjcys1HHo If you want to keep working in Canada, note that you can’t extend a PGWP."

Yeah it sucks

I hold a 1-year PGWP which is going to be expired in June and I am 7 weeks short from 1 year canadian work experience because I was temporarily laid off due to COVID19 and I applied for EI.
I wonder if the period I am receiving EI is considered as my work experience? Or will IRCC let me extend my PGWP, eventhough it is a one time deal since COVID19 happened out of no where and is beyond anybody's control. Under normal circumstance I would have been working now.

I am at 467 and I was intending to apply under CEC.
If it's possible , try to talk with employer about your issue.

I'd same issue. I was short of 2 weeks of time and got laid off. I've talked to my employer and they kept me on payroll but was working from home and sometimes need to come office.

Try your luck.

Called IRCC and they told me that there is no changes at the moment. We still need 30h/week/52 weeks no exceptions, which means layoff time does not count. The only way now is dealing with employer. I dont know how though. My employer (work field is personal service) is required to shutdown so how can they put me back on payroll?

First apply for extend your work permit and be in touch with your employer to get you back ASAP.

All the best.

Any new update on this topic? I am in the exact same situation as the author
IRCC has made no changes to the pre-COVID-19 rules.

A PGWP cannot be extended. If you want to work beyond the expiry of your PGWP, you'll need to secure a job offer and approved LMIA from an employer in Canada so that you can switch to a closed work permt.

Also no change to the requirement to have 1 year of Canadian work experience to qualify for CEC.

Hello,
I am also having the same situation holding a one-year pgwp work permit and was given a permanent layoff. Not sure what to do as I am giving interviews for a new job the employers are not agreeing for the LMIA.
