Help!! Visitor extension refused and now visa is expired

My parents are visiting since mid July 2019 and we decided to keep them here longer.

Very early in January 2020 we submitted the application to extend their stay so they could stay until July 2020. We were just informed that it was refused.

Their tourist visas expired in April 2020... so I guess now they don’t have any status (?) and the borders are closed so they can fly back to their home.

What should we do next? apply for tourist visa within Canada? Or apply to get a restauration of their status which can only be done within the next 90 days? Or apply to both?

would they get in trouble in the future because of this period without status?

A TRV has nothing to do with status and they can't apply within Canada.

They could try to apply for Restoration.

Yes, being out of status could affect future apps.

Having their TRV expired since April 2020 doesn’t have anything to do with status?

My doubt is how the restoration would apply if the TRV is expired? This wasn’t the case when we applied for their visitor extension

A TRV is a stamp in the passport allowing a person to board a commercial carrier to travel to Canada. Nothing to do with status in Canada, which is granted by CBSA upon entry.
