I am a UK citizen recently legally married to a Canadian citizen. I want to travel to Canada in the near future to join my husband.
However the application process for my spouse sponsorship hasn’t started yet. Canadian border is open for spouses. Can I go to Canada as his spouse without officially being sponsored?

I will start the visa process once I get there and on what visa do I travel on now?

You need an ETA to travel. You can visit your husband in Canada but can not appear to be moving to Canada. You meet the travel exceptions. You will need to travel with proof that you are married to a Canadian citizen.

Yes I can fill in the ETA and book my return ticket then.
So for me to travel, will I just need the marriage certificate, my husband’s passport copy to prove he is a Canadian citizen and the ETA?

ok, because my worry is not being allowed to enter at the port of arrival. But hopefully if others have done it then it should be ok.

Oh really! Well then it should be ok. I have all the required paperwork and I’ll have my return booked as well so fingers crossed Canadian border will be fine and let me through. I have a mask, gloves etc. I’m healthy.
Is there anything else I need to be aware of so that I can be prepared? If anyone or yourself can give me any advice please?

You, your partner, and anyone in the household will have to quarantine for two weeks

Keep in mind the UK Foreign Office advice is to avoid all but essential travel so this may complicate getting any travel insurance which obviously not advisable to travel to Canada as a visitor without, COVID cover would be excluded anyway

Nobody is providing coverage for covid but you should purchase travel medical insurance. That is always beneficial when it comes to showing that you are prepared As a visitor.

Yes I always travel with travel insurance anyway so will make sure I have that. Thank you!

Just a quick question - our marriage licence and certificate is issued in USA as that’s our court of jurisdiction. We used webwedmobile to get married - it’s a fully legal platform and marriage and it’s not a proxy marriage. Lots of couple have used it in the past and currently because of covid and the courts being closed and have also used it for their immigration papers. The court has issued the certificate and the technology platform ensured We were together. I’ve also had an Apostille for the certificate and both my husband’s and my passports were notarised. So I will also have the Apostille.
I just want to check that it’ll be ok because I’m legally married with all the correct documentation, just issued in the States (but obviously I did not travel to the USA).
The immigration lawyer said it’s absolutely fine for our immigration paperwork because it’s a ‘normal’, legal marriage.
