Hi! My husband is with the CRA, and I asked him to answer this for you. Sorry if it gets a little complicated. It's taxes. ;)

To file taxes in Canada you must be a resident in Canada OR a non-resident who has Canadian-sourced income.

You become a resident of Canada when you sever your residential ties with your former country and establish residential ties with your new country. For most people it is the day they arrive. Therefore, if you are here, and you plan to stay forever, you file taxes starting with the year you entered even you if you have no SIN #. Even if you don't have a SIN the CRA will give you a temporary tax number (it'll come with the return).

Honestly, the CRA only cares if you have income to report.
Hi dear,

Thanks a lot for your reply.

He did not work as he did not have a work permit but yes, he moved to stay. I thought when applying for citizenship, you need a certain number of tax return filed so that's why I thought to do it now even without income. So we are waiting for the SIN because now we have to apply by mail only. Otherwise, my understanding is that it has to be done by paper without SIN.

He is with CRA not CIC. These are 2 different offices :)
Yes, sorry @nf_sedaghat , he would not know anything about Immigration or the IRCC. Wish he did, because my PR & OWP applications seem to be stuck since March!

That may be the case for citizenship, but most of us here are still in the PR approval/application process.

Also, I know you can apply online for a SIN, if you haven't mailed in a paper application already: https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/corporate/notices/sin-applicant-guide.html

Thanks a lot! We were about to send it by mail because when I checked few days ago, the online function was not working.
As for the citizenship, we are not there yet. We are still waiting for PR (Qc resident). So we have a long way to go.

Yeah, don't worry about the taxes filing for citizenship. You have to file only if you were required to file (pretty much if you owed).. and even if you missed some filings, you can always file the taxes for all your previous years. I filed my taxes for 2014, 2015 and 2016 together, around early 2018, before applying for citizenship.

Quick question since most of us received OWP in January. Let say you entered Canada in 2019 on TRV (visit visa), applied in October 2019, do you fill 2019 tax return or you would fill 2020 tax return because you received the TRV and SIN in 2020? I know that you can fill the first tax return before receiving your SIN but I am not sure if it's when you entered, when you applied for PR or when you get the WP that you are resident for tax purposes?
Hi!
My husband filed a return for 2019 (obviously income was 0). He did this because when I changed my marital status to Married, they weren't able to properly assess my return because they did not have my husband in the system.

2019 is correct, married or unmarried (my husband/sponsor works for the CRA and I've actually had him answer this question for other posters); the simplified reason being is that you're supposed to file taxes beginning with the year that you establish residency in/move to Canada, job or no job, SIN number or no SIN number (the CRA will actually assign you a SIN number for this use only if you don't have one).

However, the government really only cares if you have income to report, which means that you have a job, which of course might not be the same year you came to Canada.

When I filled my tax for 2018, it was the year I got married and my husband didn't have SIN and my tax return went through. Maybe because he didn't fill any tax return as he came to Canada last year. I'm waiting to receive his SIN number so I fill tax from 2019 with his number. I know its not necessary but I think he will file it even it it was 0 for last year

Hi, does medical examination result got posted on ecas account?
The result of the medical itself won't be posted, but there will be an update on ECAS saying your medical results have been received. To see the PASS/FAIL you need to link your application to an online account
