Is a PGWP holder eligible for an apprenticeship in Ontario ?

Hi everyone,

I am going to apply for PGWP, and I have some recruiters offer me full time skilled jobs based on apprenticeship for skill trades.

The thing I am confused is that if a PGWP holder is elegible to apply for an apprenticeship in Ontario ?

I searched on the website of Ministry of Labour, the requirements are at least 16 years of age, legal permission to work in Canada (SIN is an evidence), meet the educational requirements and have a sponsor in Ontario.

I also searched lots of threads in this forum and there were many comments contrast. Some members who are PGWP holders got apprenticeship, some could not, others said it's only for Canadian citizens and PRs.

I have tried to contact Ministry of Labour via email, they replied that I should call the office. I did but there was only the auto-response machine and it could not answer my question.

Today is Saturday, so I can not come the office in person to ask.

I am writing the thread to find some more details of eligibility for apprenticeship. Anyone who are PGWP holder got apprenticeship for example ? It would be a great hope.

The office is likely closed anyways. There is a severe shortage of apprenticeships so Canadian PRs and citizens are supposed to get the apprenticeship spots.

However, I would only like to know that if a PGWP holder could get an apprenticeship in Ontario ? Or only for Canadian citizens and PRs based on the law ?
Can anybody confirm please ?

Canadians and PRs are supposed to be the only ones. What actually happens may be different.

Would explore whether there aree actually enough apprenticeships available and whether employers select Canadian students first. Finding an apprenticeship is often an issue for many trying to train in the trades since the employer must pay you and many small employers aren’t in a position or don’t want to take on an apprentice. Would be asking about some stats from the program coordinator about home many graduates get apprenticeships and what about people on pgwp.

So, did u get registered as an apprentice? Im also worried. Im doing as a carpenter helper under a red seal carpenter while being an international student. Also Im studying pg healthcare not doing any trade program . As Alberta only allows pgwp holders who has done carpentry trade program in school.Ive working for 20 months now . I want to make career out of it. Please help
