I’m a student at McGill university and I just finished 4th year, however I have to do an extra fall and winter semester in order to graduate. I have to extend my TRV and study permit. I have left Canada to be with my family however I have my stuff and my lease in Canada so I have to go back in August. My university will do fall online but I still want to go back to Montreal due to some obligations.
Im very worried that my study permit won’t be extended at the border because my university will do online term for fall due to coronavirus. I also know students are exempted from the bordure closure, but I am very worried. my current study permit will expire on 31st of August, so I need to get a new one in the end of August at the Canadian border. I’m super lost.
What do you think?

You can't get a study permit at the border. You need to apply online to IRCC.

Is it due to covid? I’m outside of Canada now so I don’t know how else can I get a study permit. Will they ship it to my country?
Nothing to due with COVID-19. Only Americans can get study permits at the border.

An extension would be mailed to Canada. There is no chance of the extension being processed before your current permit expires anyways.

I don’t agree. I’m not an American but I got my first study permit at the border without any issues. Also, they recommend applying for study permit 90 days before it expires. Anyways, my question was not based on getting study permits but how the covid will affect extensions given considering the university being online due to covid. But thanks!

You didn't apply for the study permit at the border. You would have submitted an app to IRCC and it was approved prior to you entering Canada. CBSA just printed it out when you entered. You must apply for the extension online.

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/corporate/publications-manuals/operational-bulletins-manuals/temporary-residents/study-permits/making-application.html

Applying at a POE

The foreign nationals who may apply for a study permit when entering Canada [R214] are any

  • national or permanent resident of the United States (U.S.)
  • person who has lawfully been admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence
  • resident of Greenland or St. Pierre and Miquelon

Provided you have the required documentation for your continuing studies, the extension should be fine regardless of the classes being online.

Agree with the comment above. Everything is easier if you are within Canada. Would advise you to go back to Canada before your current TRV & permit expires.
