Defer after study permit approved

Hi,

I applied for study permit for UWaterloo for the May 2019 intake and got it approved on 31st Jan. But now the Uni has asked me to defer to sept intake due to COVID-19. Is there anything that I need to do now to inform the embassy about this deferral or just continue with this permit and get an extension a few month before it expires?

IRCC anyway not processing study permits for May intake. They are processing SPs assuming the next intake will be in Fall 2020 only. See - https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/news/notices/trv-processing-covid.html

No need to inform them. If your SP expired before completion of your studies then you need to apply for an extension (from within Canada) at least a month before expiration.
