Hi all,

Planning to do a "soft-landing", husband is an American citizen, I am Canadian and both living in America. My husband has his COPR (expiring April 12th, 2020). Our question is does anyone have experience doing a soft-landing and in fact NOT going over the border? We would like to drive to a land border and complete the paperwork before his expiration date, but due to all the COVID-19 chaos, we would like to remain in USA. Is this possible?

Thanks all, stay safe!:)

Immigration services are considered non-essential right now, so he would likely be refused landing and turned around. If he is allowed to land, he will be going over the border. Landing requires actually entering Canada. Normally, he could turn right around back to the US. However, as he would be entering Canada, he would be subject to the mandatory 14 day self isolation within Canada.

Fortunately we are considered essential, and are not exempt from travel anymore according to Canada.ca.
We have submitted a webform inquiring about crossing especially in the midst of all this.
Are you saying they will not complete paperwork unless you cross and come in?
I’m hoping considering the circumstances of Covid-19 we are allowed to turn around.
From your experience you’re not allowed to just go to the border, complete paperwork and leave ?

Yes you are, and based on the information form the government you would be allowed in to complete the landing.

You can't land as a PR without legally entering Canada. Those entering Canada are required to self-isolate in Canada for 14 days. You are better off contacting CBSA, as IRCC has nothing to do with what happens at the border.

If I have the COPR would I able to get first entry in Canada Airport now due to Covid-19 restrictions? Because Canada Immigration states “Immediate relatives are exempted from the travel ban” which include spouse & dependent child.
Someone please clarify.:confused::confused:

Hi. I have a similar situation. My COPR is expiring in last week of May, planning a soft landing from the US. But will need to return in a couple of days. Is the 14-day quarantine manadatory for all? I mean, are all travellers required to stay a minimum of 2 weeks?

Yes, the 14 day quarantine is mandatory upon entry.
