Hey Guys! I applied in Nov-Dec 2019 to 2 universities - York University (Schulich School of Business), Toronto ON & University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), Vancouver BC.

About me -
  • I'm 25 yr old , female.
  • I was born and raised in Dubai, UAE. Indian by citizenship.
  • I have a Bachelors in Business Admin. (Marketing) from Canadian University Dubai. [WES accredited 4 yrs bachelors program].
  • I have worked as a Marketing Executive for 3 yrs in Dubai.
  • IELTS Academic : L8, R7, W6.5, S8 ; overall 7.5
  • IELTS General: L8.5, R8, W7.5, S8.5 ; overall 8.

York University (Schulich SoB) MMKG -
  • In Toronto, but away from city.
  • Full-time study
  • 1 year program - Masters in Marketing (MMKG)
  • Fee: $ 80,000 CND + expenses
  • Well reputed within Canada.
UNBC -
  • In Prince George, but option to study in Vancouver from Langara Campus (which I'm choosing)
  • Part-time study (1 weekend per month)
  • 2 year program - MBA only
  • Fee: $ 50,000 CND + expenses
  • Decent university, well reputed within BC.
My concerns are the following -
  1. Will I be able to work part-time or full-time ? Options please.
  2. Should I study part-time and apply for work permit once I get there?
  3. Is it hard to get a job (in professional capacity) as a student?
  4. Is it hard to get LMIA approval ? Can I move from student visa to work visa?
  5. Should I study full-time and go with 20 hr on/off campus job without work permit?
  6. Will I get PGWP if I go to UNBC (DLI=YES)?

Any suggestions, recommendations and personal experiences are welcome!!
Please help a girl out!

1. With a study permit you're only able to work part time.
2. You would need an LMIA to get a work permit.
3. You could only work for 20 hours a week, so that limits your options.
4. It is hard to find an employer willing to get an LMIA for you. It costs them a lot. You aren't allowed to pay for it.
5. That's your only option if you are a student.
6. No, because you would be a part time student.

York University is in the city of Toronto. It's not in the country . It's off the subway line
It's not downtown, but neither is the majority of the city

I have been accepted into Schulich SoB as well. It's expensive but worth it in my opinionm however I qualify for a 3Y PGWP and i do not know if you will.
Schulich Business is probably only behind Rotman + Ivey Western in Ontario and ranked Top 5 in the country. I would definitely recommend attending Schulich, in fact, I will probably see you if you do!

If you take the second program which is part time, you will not be able to work while you study and you won't qualify for a PGWP once you complete your studies. Part time programs do not qualify for a PGWP.

If you take the first program, you'll be able to work part time (up to 20 hours a week) while you study and will qualify for a PGWP once you complete your studies provided you are a full time student throughout.

Yes - extremely difficult to find an employer willing to get an approved LMIA. Assume it won't be possible.

While you are a student, assume you'll most likely be working a minimum wage job not related to your profession or studies.

1. If studying full-time, you can work 20 hours per week during school and full-time during scheduled breaks. If studying part-time, you are not allowed to work AT ALL during the entire program.

2. You can't just apply for a work permit. You would need a job offer from an employer with an LMIA. Do not expect to get one.

3. Yes. You are limited in how many hours you can work and cannot be permanent, so employers are less likely to hire you.

4. Extremely difficult. Do not expect that you will be able to do this.

5. Your choice.

6. No. Being a DLI has nothing to do with whether you get a PGWP or not. Part-time studies = no PGWP.
