I am an international student in Canada. I came here to join Mcmaster university. I arrived here two days after my classes started, so the uni did not allow me to join. Now I have applied in several colleges for May intake. Can anyone tell me that can I stay legally in Canada till May? And also, can I work? What do I do?

As you are not actively pursuing studies, your study permit is not valid beyond 90 days. If you work, it will be illegal.

You can apply to change your status to visitor and then apply for a new study permit closer to May or return to your country and come back to Canada closer to your new intake date.

Yes, you can do a short term course. Note that it is more difficult to get a study permit while in Canada, so you really may want to consider going home in the interim.

Your study permit is only valid as long as you are actively pursuing your studies. The short term course wouldn't count. If not studying, the permit should be invalidated after 90 days.

If you are granted extension, and you get accepted for September then you will have to apply for extension again. Make sure you don't exceed 90 days after the end of your program before applying.

Students who have completed a program of study and will be starting a new program of study within 150 days of receiving a written confirmation of program completion from their current institution
Students may work off campus on a full-time basis until the start of their new program if the following applies:

• they meet the eligibility criteria to work off campus [R186(v)]

• they have submitted an application to change conditions, extend their stay or remain in Canada as a student before their current study permit expired, or they still have a valid study permit
• they have been issued a letter of acceptance to a subsequent program of full-time study at a DLI and will be starting the new program within 150 calendar days of receiving a notification of program completion from their current institution

If the new program of study starts more than 150 calendar days after the first date they receive written confirmation of program completion from their current institution, the student is eligible to work off campus only during the first 150 consecutive days after the first date they receive written confirmation of program completion. They should then either apply to change their status (for instance, change it into visitor status) or leave Canada until their new program commences.

Sorry D does it mean if I am a student taking second program after I finished first program, I can work fulltime in between 2 programs provided I meet all eligibility criteria. How about my owp? Can he also work in between those 2 programs?

I finish April then start for new program on August. That is less than 150 days.

Yes, if you meet the requirements, you can continue working. Your spouse can work as long as he has a valid work permit or Implied Status.
