Hello Everyone ,

I am new here , a friend of mine just referred me to this forum and told me i will get tips from forum members who are going to Canada for work.

I am an European citizen from the scandinavia area and I plan moving to canada for work . I have been in retail all my life and I was told that if i intend to work in canada, i will need to get an LMIA from the employer. So far i have not been lucky to get one maybe because its from Indeed. Could someone kindly direct me to a job bank or site i could go to where there are Canadian job listings that employers offer lmia. I will really appreciate if someone could please help me out. Hope to hear something soon.

thanking you in advance ..

Frank

Sadly, there are very few employers willing to apply for an LMIA for workers, unless the worker has very specialized skills that are hard to find in Canada. An LMIA requires an employer advertise for a vacancy in specific ways for a specified amount of time, and prove that no Canadian was available to do the work, then pay a $1000 fee and wait 3-4 months for the LMIA to be verified.

Retail employers are not likely to go through this effort since they can generally find Canadians to do the work.

Thanks alot for the information .. I guess the cost to get one is a hefty fee for an employer to pay , but i wonder how some members here do get offered one .. but thanks

I would recommend that you pro-actively start contacting employers on LinkedIn. Tell them why you would be a better fit for the job? What value you can add to their business? How you can make yourself irreplaceable at any company you join.

You never know when someone just might be looking for someone like you, and you pop up in their inbox.

To be honest, a lot of times it's corruption. Agents charge applicants massive "consultancy fees" that they pay to the employer to subsidize the LMIA cost. Or the employer is a family member of the applicant. Etc.

Most get LMIAs by being highly skilled and specialized in a particular field.

You will not get an LMIA for retail. If you are from "the scandanavia area", look into whether you qualify for IEC.

Yeah I get what you mean . Well I guess I will just forget about it. Been to canada loads of times. I was looking into going back to my old job with Nike , they have a position open in canada so I was thinking u could apply and since Nike is a big company getting an LMIA won't be a problem .. but oh well

The LMIA would still be a problem. LMIA approval depends on the unemployment rates, advertising the job for months, proving no Canadians are available for the job, etc. Also, big companies tend to not even bother with LMIAs unless it is at the senior management/executive level.

I totally agree with you ... I will just forget about it cause I thought it was easier getting an LMIA but I think I am going to sit this one out
