SS refers to security screening which takes 4-18 months before PPR is issued. Nobody knows exactly why some people are selected for SS as there has never been a clear pattern, but it is generally believed that the selection criteria have something do to with the applicant's nationality, work history, travel history and other personal or professional circumstances.
Will the agent tell me if my profile has been picked for SS ?
I am now at 85% complete, August 7th AOR, no updates after biometrics. Feeling really nervous now :(

The percent indicates time elapsed since AOR.. Don't rely much on that..
You could ask for status of evaluations eligibility, criminality etc via phone, email or gcms notes

Sydney office is moving ridiculously slow.
My security hasn't even started.
Medicals passed on Sept 4th and no update since then. Average time for that office is apparently 8 months.

Hey bro

Similar situation here. My eAOR was Aug 2, and the progress bar shows 87% completed and only 23 days left. I don't have any faith in this computer-managed system at all. In most cases, the call center agent doesn't tell us what kind of security they are conducting on us. I myself have called numerous times and none of those agents has mentioned a single word about SS. Th only way to confirm is to order CBSA/CSIS notes.
Last time I called I was told eligibility and medicals passed.
That's all, they did say I should have update soon (that was 3 weeks ago :( ) ..

I am also in Sydney VO, but the slow speed in my case is not because of the VO. I am currently in the fifth month of my SS. I really hope it can be finalized in 6 months, although I am preparing myself for a 8-12 month wait.
I ordered CBSA notes recently to findout if if i am under SS. Is der any other way we can findout if we are under SS like country of origin, excess travel history etc?

There is another way to look at this: currently the general trend is that if you are not issued with PPR 1.5-2 months after your eligibility was passed, then it is highly likely that it is SS. Have you been able to figure out the time your eligibility passed?
I don’t know about Passed but my eligibility was MET on sep 17th, I paid RPRF on sep 18th and according to my GCMS notes my RPRF was updated in my account on Oct 2nd. Usually after eligibility met by an agent it will be reviewed by a senior officer and than it will be changed to passed right?
When i called CIC on Monday the agent told me another eligibility assessment was done on my application on the last week of November so i am assuming it is done by a senior officer

Do you know which VO is processing your case?
My case has been processed by CIO Sydney and according to my notes, my eligible “passed” on September 5 and on that same day my security started. However, I’ve only seen a case processing agent’s note saying eligibility pass, and there is no senior officer’s notes at all. I’ve heard that in some VO, senior officer’s review happens only after security is cleared and the same officer will send out PPR if he or she is satisfied with everything, but in some other cases, senior officer's review is done while security is still on going. My view is that your security was likely to begin at the time of your eligibility met rather than after the senior officer's review.
My VO is also Sydney NS. Security means is it comprehensive SS for everyone or for some it will be just a basic Security Check?
Also if you don’t mind me asking what is your country of origin and do you have excess travel history?

Security can mean either one. There is actually no official difference recognized by IRCC between security screening and "basic security check". They simply refer to it as "security". You do need your CBSA notes to find out if i is a comprehensive security screening.

I prefer not to talk about nationality as many people from my country have got their PPR without any delay or SS, and I thank you for your respect for my decision not to say anything about nationality:) As to travel history, I do have a lot of international travels but most of them were EU countries, US, Singapore and Australia. I have never been to any "flagged countries". I think the slection criteria for SS are a combination of all factors instead of any single one, so saying a person is under SS purely because of his nationality or travel history is not reasonable.
I respect your decision, IRCC does put this whole security checks under a big mystery i guess I just have to wait for my CBSA notes to find out what is going on. Thank you so much for your information

Based on what you said, you may expect to receive some good news in the next few weeks:)
Sure hope so, but I am not feeling confident at the moment. I did just after speaking with the agent, but that was 3 weeks ago now :)

By the way, do you know why they said "you should have an update soon"? Last time I called them, they said something similar to me, raising my curiosity to know how the call center agents know we may have an update soon. Do they see something on their screen that we don't know and cannot see? or it is just a pure speculation or even just a good wish? My guess is that they said this to me simply because the agent could see that my 6-month period ends on Feb 2, so she just said I may get some news before that date. I have seen a few cases on this forum where applicants were given false hope by call center agents.
I think the reason the agent I spoke with said that it was because I asked "its getting close to my 6 month period end" (Feb 7). I think this was just a default response sadly :(

This is good information, I have traveled a bit in EU and lived in the US, I do really hope that doesn't trigger the longer comprehensive security screening for me.
Another question is background check and security screening the same?

Thank you for contacting Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

We verified the information on file and can confirm that:

  • The responsible office verified the eligibility requirements under the immigration program for which you have applied,
    • you may be contacted via your account if additional information is needed.
  • The security background verification has not been initiated.
  • The criminal background verification is currently valid.
Hello guys,
This is the response i got from a web enquiry, does anyone know if my eligibility has been passed?
Also its been 5months and why does my security not been initiated yet?
