But those 25 year old or whatever age have actually paid into the system . You know , worked , paid taxes etc, not arrive getting full access to a all ready over burdened medical system , not having paid any payroll taxes into the system for that access . So you can’t compare the two. Yup, those Canadians , getting access to a medical system just because they were born here, who knew all along they were the reason the system is so screwed up
I guess my mother, born here , really screwed over the medical system by getting terminal cancer , sitting in a bed in ICU for a month , oh wait , that was after she waited three years to get a colonoscopy. She paid into the system for 50 years, but that doesn’t count
3 years to get colonoscopy at age 50?

Which province is that? That's terrible. Definitely not Alberta.

Leaving EOI open longer and then what? Pick the first 20k or do a lottery to pick the 20k out of all the EOIs. That is essentially what happened in the past 2 years? For someone who wanted the wealthy to get priority or who complains about the randomness of a lottery an essay writing contest is pretty random and will likely lead to a lot of creative writing. It is also very random as a person or committee chooses the applications they feel deserves a spot. Paying people to read through 100000 essays is certainly a waste of money even if you have to pay to enter the contest. It will essentially still be a lottery.

Would encourage people to look at the Australian system. It requires things like having the majority of your children living in Australia.
Ummm are you saying that all our students taking English exams writing essays is a lottery in terms of the grades they get?

Anyway I talk about the essay writing competition in jest.

Leaving EOI open longer then pick the first 20,000 or 10,000.

I liked the FIFO in 2019. Few people complained that it was FIFO. They complained that they could not access the website. They complained that it closed too fast. They complained that it closed so fast that people with disabilities would have stood no chance.

So......just leave it open longer. Lol!

And don't give out too much information.

Look the lottery gave out literally ZERO information on how the lottery was conducted and whether it was done fairly. ZERO transparency which you will not find in any other lottery.

No system will make people happy as I have discussed before. Immigrants vs Canadians concerned about healthcare system.

Leaving the lottery open when you take the first 20k is the same as this year. People are going to try and apply as early as possible and it will be over in less than 10 minutes. Nobody is going to wait a few hours to put down their name even if EOI is open for 3 days but it is FIFO.

Are you serious? You are the one suggesting people write in an essay about why their parents should get selected like the similar home lotteries you see when your write a letter why your family deserves a home and send in $100. How is that the same as an essay in school? At least make your comparisons make sense. A teacher is not selecting one essay to win the competition. You decide these suggestions are just a joke but all these crazy suggestions you have go into lots of detail.

Today you like FIFO when you didn’t like it yesterday. There is no way for FIFO to last longer if everyone knows you need to sign up as soon as possible. Next year would likely be faster if it was FIFO.

If money is the factor here, then increase the Application fees so proper talented people are handling the applications and in return they will get compensated.
I agree, here is a few tips to help with this year intake:

1. Accept only Canadian citizens and no PR sponsor, the longer the years of being citizen the higher priority

2. Set up front application fee of at least 30k (like Australia) to cover medical cost. If not successful then refund the full fee minus $300 screening fee. Anyone not afford this fee need to work harder as it is not a fraction of healthcare cost for their parents that Canada tax payers will pay for them. I believe many sponsors would die to pay this fee to reunite with their family, this fee will help offset Canadian tax payer cost for admitting seniors.

3. Prioritize based on number of years paying tax plus the total amount of income tax paid to Canada by sponsors.

4. If already applied for parents then need to wait 5 years before can apply for in-law.

5. Any dependents to parents need to pay extra 10K for healthcare fee.

6. Limit the number of parents to be sponsored per country of origin (No single country can have more than 20% intake of parents/grandparents) each year.

When did I ever say I do not like FIFO? I am a champion for FIFO!

Tell me what was it people complained about the FIFO last year? That it was FIFO? No right?

Those who got in didnt complain. And those who didnt get in didnt complain that it was FIFO. They complained that the system told them they didnt make it right away.

So just make it such that no one knows if they made it right away. But say that it is FIFO.

Release the results maybe 48 hours later if 30 days is too long for you.

What's wrong with that?

After all, all the other ideas have detractors too. So why spend more effort and money? To make people unhappy again and create a new set of complaints.

Just address the complaints from last year and tweak it slightly.

I never said the essay writing gets picked as a lottery. You did!

Why can't the essays be marked? And 10,000 highest marked essays get chosen?

You are not an immigrant so I bet you have never taken IELTS exam have you?

There is an essay component in IELTS too. Is that a lottery? Even if it is all us immigrants obliged and wrote an essay for the IELTS because we had to.

So if you think about it writing an essay is part of the process of becoming a PR.

As usual, lots and lots of ideal for renovation of the PGP 2020.
So far, we have typing race and lotto. To make it "feel like" fair, I would do both: 10K for typing race and 10K for lotto, period!
Step 1: Invite those potential sponsors to submit their interests to sponsors. Sponsors must agree to be check for household income. Open the form for 1 month
Step 2: After 1 month, close the form, check for the household income and inform those who are qualified only
Step 3: Do the typing race, take 10K, for those who are qualified
Step 4: Do the lotto, take another 10-15K, for those who are not yet invited in step 3
Step 5: Increase the passing standard for medical exam for parents/grandparents

This way, potential and qualified sponsors have 2 chances to get the spot, darn better heh?

Also not Ontario.
Hope the original poster can share which province and city that 3 year wait happened in.

The wait for a screening colonoscopy ie no symptoms is about 1 year. Could be longer now. But we all do FIT test first. If it is positive you get the colonoscopy done within 3 months usually pretty soon. We are also moving away from screening colonoscopies without any other factors eg family history and FIT test due to risks with the procedure.

The wait times for different specialists can vary as well. Hence family doctors should be able to advocate for their patients and help get them seen earlier if they feel the situation warrants it.

I had heard and read many horror stories about the healthcare system being bad and long waits.

But now that I have worked in the system I will say I have not encountered that.

I will contend that I only have experience first hand with Calgary. So it might yet be true in other parts of Canada.

  • Open PGP applications in June, not January and require 3 years previous NOA with the app.
  • Accept however many applications that meet LICO online only for 30 days and make lying about meeting LICO misrepresentation with a 5 year ban from applying for falsifying information.
  • Each application gets a number, 1 application each
  • At the end of the 30 days draw 10 or 20 or 30,000 application in a random draw from the numbers issued to the application when submitted.
It’s fair, it’s equal chance for anyone, penalizes those that waste spots.

Judging an essay is too subjective. Your idea of a good essay isn’t my idea of a good essay and opens the government up to future litigation. Someone will play the race or discrimination card with an essay.

Yes. Essay as I said is in jest. Lol!

I am just being creative and thinking far out of the box looking at instances of other ways used in other situations.

My serious suggestion is not to change too much. People dont like change anyway.

So I agree with your suggestions. I would add that the 5 year ban that be written as a MAY BE BANNED.

It is hard to implement and is open to legal challenge again. Just the threat of it.

So you are for going back to lottery system. I think that is a step backwards though. People will complain lottery trivializes the process and it also means people could have never won the lottery ever. Which is depressing.

FiFO on the other hand gives hope that one could change how they do things and improve their chances the next year. I mean really desperate people would invest to hire professionals who might have an edge with better computers faster internet speeds etc. Pre filled forms or whatever.

A lottery is the "fairest" most random lucky approach to distributing the spots of course. But if you have repeatedly been unsuccessful in the lottery you will feel really lousy and helpless.

3 years to get colonoscopy at age 50?

She worked and contributed into the system for 55 years .
Yes, it was Alberta .Ontario is fast .This was prior to that new colonoscopy centre being opened at Foothills .And yes the wait times were long, maybe, hopefully they’ve improved by now . I remember her calling me at work the morning of her test , asking me whether since she waited so long , was it worth the time . I said, yes, get it done . Didn’t matter. The cancer had metastasized. She was over 70, she was not a priority in the system, she was not young , she was gone in three months
The only thing that happened fast ironically, was getting a spot in a hospice, that only took a day
More than likely they needed the bed in ICU she was in for a month, since we had tried taking care of her at home , but by then she required 24/7 pain management & care

Everyone have a story to tell about the Canadian Healthcare. I had to wait for 14 hours in an Emergency for severe kidney pain because of the kidney stone. Because the Healthcare is free and I was not dying they kept in waiting room while the Doctors were treating the people who were dying.
That's what I am saying. All the money I paid for years and your Mom paid for 55 years was useless at the point when we needed. It would be been better to save all that money and see a Doctor or Specialist when you really are in need.
