Hi,
IRCC received all my and my husband necessary citizenship documents on May 2018. We passed the test on Nov 2018, but we have not been invited for ceremony yet. We contacted them several times, but nobody gave us any information. I asked them to separate our files, and it seems the request has been rejected. On the other hand, our PR card is about to expire, so I am so worried. What should I do? Please help!

Hi, before we go too far into this, what is your ECAS status?

I don't know what ECAS means, but if you mean online application status, it is in process.
Yes, sorry - ECAS is the online status. The good news is that if it’s still ‘In Process’ that means IRCC is still working on your files and no decision has been made yet. It’s impossible to guess the reason for the delay but have you tried reaching out to your local MP? I had some success with this. I took my test in early June and waited nearly six months after this in the same ‘In Process’ status. I contacted my MP, who did some checking. Within a few weeks of that I went to Decision Made and I’m expecting a ceremony invite.

It’s impossible to guess or speculate on why your progress has been so slow but it could be a number of things including CSIS delays with your security clearances. However, the fact that you are still In Process is actually a good thing because at least your application hasn’t been rejected. Regarding your PR, unless you plan to travel/leave Canada, your PR card expiration date doesn’t matter. That’s just the date the card expires; as long as you’ve met the 5-year residency requirements during the term of your card, you’re fine and don’t need to worry. If you do plan on traveling soon and you don’t have a passport from a visa exempt country, I recommend you renew the card immediately. I had to do the same thing as you and it took about 8 weeks to renew the card but it was relatively fast and easy compared to the citizenship process. If you need to travel and your PR card expires in the next 6-12 months, don’t wait. Renew it now, because even after you get to decision made, it could be months before your citizenship ceremony.

1. The posted processing time is 12 months.
