Hi all,

I'm Canadian living in Kuala Lumpur with my wife, she's Algerian, and we are looking to start the outland spousal sponsorship. One of the requirements for spousal sponsorship is for my wife to have a police report from the current country of residence and from the country she has stayed at primarily since the age of 18.

For my wife that country that she has lived at the longest since an adult has been Egypt. We managed to get the official Malaysian police report very quickly and easily, within a few days. However, we are having an issue with getting the Egyptian police report in a timely manner. Having the police report mailed from Cairo to the Egyptian embassy in Kuala Lumpur can take approximately 9 months. We are hoping to start the sponsorship application sooner than that, as we realize that on top of this it will take 12 months to receive a green light to move to Canada. and that we should be mailing this police report along with our sponsorship package immediately, as far as the first step has been explained to us.

So the options as we see it, in order to start with mailing our sponsorship paperwork as quickly as possible, are:
1) We fly to Cairo, get the police report, fly back to Kuala Lumpur. Costly and not guaranteed to get it immediately. Afterwards we can mail the sponsorship package with full documents enclosed.

2) We will wait for the police report to be mailed to Egyptian embassy, but in the meantime mail our sponsorship paperwork immediately and without the Egyptian sponsorship paperwork. We include in our package a note that we are waiting for the Egyptian police report and will mail it as soon as it's been received (approximately 9 months time).

3) We mail our Sponsorship package immediately without the Egyptian police report, and include an Algerian police report (which my wife already has, although now from a few years ago) rather than Egyptian police report, with the same indication that we will mail the Egyptian police report as soon as we receive it (approximately 9 months time).

Not sure if we are missing any other options? Or if option 1 is the only realistic way to get this outland spousal sponsorship started as soon as possible?

Any guidance or advice is greatly appreciated,
Best regards

My husband actually went to Egypt (he is Egyptian, living in Qatar) because he knew it would take very long to receive the police report. I think, unfortunately, the best bet is to fly to Cairo to get it. I believe you must send the police clearance with your application- we had to, so we did not take any chances sending the paperwork without it.

I would recommend calling IRCC and asking if you can send the Egyptian police clearance at a later date or send a letter. I would not send it without asking first because then you run the risk of them sending the entire application back.

Hope this helps in some way and good luck!
