Hello. Need help! I am a working permit holder that will expire on July 2020. and my first visa that was stamped in my passport was already expired last July 2019. I am planning to go to the US soon to do the biometrics for spousal sponsorship. Since my first visa was expired already, what will i apply for me to leave temporarily in Canada and come back safe and continue my work as a caregiver, is TRV or re- entry visa? Thank you

There's no such thing as a re-entry visa. It's all just a TRV. You will apply for a TRV.

Also, you may not need a TRV. If you have a valid work permit, and you are driving to the US and back in a private car, you can enter on your work permit. If you are flying or taking commercial transport, it is better to have a TRV.

Oh really. I have a valid work permit. It will expire july 2020. If ever i will get a TRV, what will be my category, will it be a visitor or a work permit extension? Thanks

You can return to Canada on your expired TRV, as long as you don't leave the US to go to any other countries.

The visa category doesn't really matter. The visa only allows you to travel to Canada and ask for permission to enter.

CBSA will grant you status based on your work permit - so even if you have a tourist visa, you will be allowed in as a worker. The visa and the permit are two entirely separate things.

The exception when travelling to the US and back with an expired TRV applies to all forms of transportation, including flights.

I've always wondered about that - so there will be no issues checking in with an expired visa? The airline staff are trained and aware of this exception?

Ah, I see that you have to return before the "end of your approved stay".

So that means if I'm allowed in for six months, and I leave after 5 months and 15 days, I have to return in the next two weeks if I want to use the expired visa. If I want to come back after 20 days, I would need a new visa.

Hi. Just in the US, only for 3-5 days maybe. I just need to do the biometrics since there is no biometrics here in Canada. Can i go in the US by air? Or would it be safe to travel there by land? Thank you
In your case, as @canuck_in_uk points out, it is safe to travel by any means of transport as long as you will return before the expiry of your work permit - which you obviously will.

So basically, you're in luck. You don't need to do anything. Just make sure you don't leave the US and go anywhere else, even for one day.
