Hi everyone,

I am a PR - arrived a few months ago. I am hoping to be able to sponsor my minor sisters to come study in Canada (they are 15 and 12 now). I am getting different answers on different pages so I thought I'd ask here. How many tax years do I have to pass so I can be eligible to sponsor them? Three tax years or one?

Thank you

Post in the International Student section of the forum. This section is for sponsoring family members for PR.

You cannot sponsor your sisters independently. You will have to qualify to sponsor your parents and then include your sisters as dependents when you sponsor your parents. Note that you must meet income requirements to sponsor your parents for three years in a row before you can qualify and only a limited number of applications are accepted each year. The program will re-open again in January. If you just became a PR a few months ago, you're likely looking at at least three years before you will qualify.

And this is exactly what I want - sponsor them for PR. I should be able to do that, correct?
As explained above, no. If they are still dependents of your parents, you could apply to sponsor them all once you meet the income requirements.

Sorry to jump in here, I am a Canadian Citizen, we are interested in sponsoring a sibling of my wife. If the parents and dependents are sponsored and approved but the parents have no plans to go to Canada can the siblings go without them? Any other possible ways to get a sibling sponsored?

Thanks

The parents would have to land in Canada and become a PRs along with the minor child. After that, whether they live in Canada or not is entirely up to them.

No - no other way for a sibling. Only through parent sponsorship and only while that sibiling is under 22 years old.

I thought that might be the case. Thanks for the clarification. Cheers

One other Q, if the sibling applied through a study visa does it help it the applicant has relatives in Canada?
It doesn't help unfortunately. If anything that sometimes reduces the chances of approval since IRCC can then sometimes become concerned that the student has plans on remaining in Canada long term and is using the student visa as a means of doing this.

Note that tuition fees are approximately $15,000 per year per child to attend public school. Unless you are seriously flush with cash, I would consider holding off making that investment until they are old enough to attend university in Canada and can then hopefully build their own path to PR.

That makes sense, we are semi flush but not fully flush as might be required. Straight A student so will look at it after he gets to the post secondary level. Thanks for your input.
