If PGWP refused - other options

Hi guys,

I haven’t received news of my PGWP yet, but I am afraid that it may be refused, since I failed a course one semester, which made me a part-time + I had to withdraw from my program on my last semester because I was denied entry to canada (didn’t notice my student permit had expired). I was readmitted and I already graduated but I just think my chances are low because of this.

Therefore I wanna ask what my other options are; my boyfriend is studying there now so can I:
- come to canada as a visitor under eTa?
- apply for a different type of work permit (not sure which ones I am eligible for)?
Thank you!!

If your PGWP is denied, you can come as a visitor and stay for six months (at most). You can't work at all though.

You wouldn't be eligible for any other kind of work permit. You'd have to get an employer to get a positive LMIA and then get a closed work permit. Since you have Canadian education, that may not be too difficult for you. You can always apply for jobs and see what happens.

If you stay a year with your boyfriend and become common law (you'd have to live together), other options will open up.

Thank you for the quick reply!! Quick question - does the common law benefits apply if he is not Canadian? He is an international student with a student permit.

Yes - it applies. Note that to prove common law, you must have hard evidence that shows you've lived together continuously for at least one full year. This inlcudes items such as a joint lease, joint utilities and joint bank accounts.

I guess you can also take graduate diploma/certificate course for 1 year and maybe with this you can get a PGWP next year.
