Hello,

I am currently doing my Masters at Concordia University. I am thesis student. I have finished my thesis. My defence is scheduled on September 2nd. I would be able to get the degree completion certificate by September 4th. My student visa expires on August 31.

My initial plan was to get the degree completion ceritficate and go to the border to get the PGWP.

So my queries are:

1) Will it be illegal for me to do my thesis defence on September 3 (study permit expires on August 31)

2) Should I extend my study permit

Please let me know.

Thnaks

Once your study permit expires, you are considered staying in Canada illegally. You should start your SP renewal right away. When you are waiting for CIC decision, you can still be in Canada to study.

“If you want to keep studying, you need to extend your study permit. You should apply to extend your permit at least 30 days before it expires. Make sure your passport doesn’t expire at the same time. You can’t extend your study permit beyond your passport’s expiry date.

If you apply before your permit expires, you can stay in Canada under the same conditions as your current study permit until you get a decision.
You should apply to extend your study permit if you plan to travel outside Canada and your permit will expire while you are travelling.

If your study permit expires, and you haven’t applied for an extension, you must leave Canada.”
Hope that helps.

TRV is not a permit, it is only for traveling to Canada. You cant legally do any studies/study related activities without a valid study permit.
I have one more query.

I spoke to the international student office. They told, I cannot apply for study permit before the 31st of August, as my CAQ expires on 31st August. I have not applied for the new CAQ.

According to them I can do the following:

1) Finish your degree by september 6th. Go to the border. Do flagpoling and get the work permit.
2) Apply for change in status to visitor from student

my question is that, if I am doing 1) I would going to the border with an expired study permit (expired for around 10 days)

or if I apply for change in status from student to visitor, would it be an implied status? ( Can I then try flag-poling with an implied status)

Also, Can I apply study permit with a CAQ that is expiring next week. My application will be rejected, but I still will get an implied status for a till my graduation is over (September 6th)

Thank you so much

Do you mean CSQ?

You have to extend you student status and extend your CSQ or you can’t defend your thesis. You must have a valid study permit and CSQ in order to defend your thesis. You can bring your proof of extensions to prove that you are on implied status when you flagpole. Will you have all the formal proof that your thesis has been defended and that you have formally graduated within 24 hour?

I was talking about "CAQ". And the university has told me, I don't need the permit to defend, as I am defending my thesis as a part of the previous semester. ( I am not registering for the next semester.)

My main concern is that if I change my status from student to visitor, will I be on implied status? Or is it only applicable for study and work permit applications.
