Hello.

Am planning on applying for a master with a duration of 2 years, my passport will expire in 1 year from now.

The main problem is that I am from Venezuela and we currently have a mayor problem for getting passports, people wait 3 or 4 years to get their passport renewed, as you can see for example in the Netherlands they issue this communication:

https://ind.nl/en/news/Pages/Temporary-solution-passport-problems-Venezuelans.aspx

To summarize I have a passport that will allow me to travel in time before the start of the master that I intend to apply to, but will expire while am studying so I will like to know if this will force the officials to deny my student visa.

Thanks.

The app wouldn't be denied for this. However, the study permit would only be issued to the passport expiry date. You would need to get a new passport and apply to extend your study permit prior to it expiring.

Thanks for replying.

If I get the student visa and begin my studies, and my passport expires while am studying, but I have proof that I applied for my passport and am waiting for it, do I have to stop studying and leave Canada?

Yes. Status is not granted beyond passport validity. You need to have a new passport before your study permit expires so that you can apply for an extension. If you don't get the new passport before your study permit expires, you will have to leave Canada before expiry. Otherwise, you will end up in Canada illegally.

While googling for this predicament, I found that Canada is granting an extension for Venezuelans in Canada with expired passport, here's a press article detailing it

What I haven found is an official press release from the gov of Canada, actually there's an oficial release saying that Canada is not accepting provisional passport from Venezuela so I don't know what to believe
