Hi all,

I have applied to sponsor my parents to Canada last year and I have already been approved as a sponsor and now the application has been moved to my parent's home country for further processing. I also got married in Canada in February 2019. I am also applying to sponsor my wife to Canada as well, submitting the application within two weeks. She is here with me on a temporary visa and we would have the birth here in Canada.

My questions is in regards to the minimum income requirement to sponsor my parents. My wife and I are thinking of getting pregnant. My last three years' income is enough to sponsor 4 people only (myself, my wife, and both my parents) as per IRCC minimum income requirement which is enough for now for my parental sponsorship. In the event of us having a child before my parents receive their PR status, how would that affect my parental sponsorship for my parents since my income is not enough to sponsor 5 people?

Would they take into account my 2020's income alone, or would they still want to see enough income to sponsor 5 people going 3 years back, or the kid won't count in terms of the income requirement (which I highly doubt)?

Thank you so much in advance, any help is appreciated.

The kid won't count until born. So once the kid is born, you'll need income to cover 5 people for that year and going forward.

Make sure your wife gets PR long before the due date, otherwise you will have to pay for the birth out of pocket. Plan accordingly.

Just to clarify, so let's say the kid is born on March 30, 2020, when I file my income for 2020 in early 2021, I need to have income to cover 5 people (considering my parents still haven't received their PR by then)? So when I file my 2019 income in early 2020, it won't count because the kid wasn't even born in 2019, correct?

Yes - in 2020 you will need to have income to cover 5 people. For 2019 and earlier - you will only need income for 4.

You should really be more concerned about whether you she will have health coverage unless you have at least 10K. Things can go wrong in pregnancies so you should have health coverage from the beginning or be prepared to pay. It is not just the delivery that can be expensive.
