Hi all,

I am an international student. I have a valid study permit and have completed my first semester in UFV for my BCIS program with a 3.91 GPA. I went to Dubai for Summer, and will be returning in July 27th. Fall 2019 starts in September but I will be taking it off because I was really high on wait lists and could not get my classes, therefore I have moved my payment to Winter 2020 and was planning to work full time until I have read some really bad things about getting a PGWP, my study permit being invalid, etc etc...

Since I will not be able to work full time on just my study permit which states in conditions: (MAY ACCEPT EMPLOYMENT ON OR OFF CAMPUS IF MEETING ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA AS PER R186(F), (V), OR (W). MUST CEASE WORKING IF NO LONGER MEETING THESE CRITERIA)
Do I need to apply for a Work Permit... or change my status to Visitor... or just remain in my current study permit? Will I need to apply for a new study permit? I would like to stay on the path to PR... and this is really scary for me.

Thank you.

Since you are not studying during the fall 2019 term, you cannot work at all during this time (either full time or part time). If you work, you'll be doing so illegally and will be violating the terms of your study permit. If you want to work, you would need to switch to a closed work permit. In order to do this, you would need a job offer in Canada and your employer would need to obtain an approved LMIA before you could apply for the work permit. It's generally extremely difficult to find an employer willing to go through this process.

If you have to take the fall 2019 term off, then you need to get an official leave of studies from your school. Otherwise you won't qualify for a PGWP once you complete your studies.

The best option to make sure you get a PGWP and remain on the path to PR is not to take fall 2019 but to continue your studies as a full time student in September. Doing anything else puts you at risk.

Hey scylla - thank you so much for the great reply. I got my stuff together yesterday and am now registering for Fall 2019 after reading a very similar reply on this forum. Thank you!
