Hello , I am new to the process of applying via the express entry route . I have read my fair share of posts to absorb and understand as many details about the application and requirements. I have recently completed a one year internship/housejob at a university hospital . This role was that of a intern doctor,i would like to know if this one year internship can be counted as on a one year work experience . It was continuous for a year, fully paid, not part / didnt contribute to my medical education ( my degree ) as my degree was given to me prior to my internship and had no correlation with my degree. As per the other requirements and NOC 3112 my internship fits perfectly. My estimated CRS score is at 459. Can anybody please guide me if my internship can counted as a one year work experience. Thank you !!

Hello, I am having the same query. Post Graduation Medical Residency can be counted as work experience?
I have gone through several forums and have sent email. But failed to get a concrete answer. Have approached consultancy as well but it was waste of money and time.
Could you please help, Also if you already went through the process. I think i can get the best answer from a person who has first onhand experience.
Will be appreciable if you guide in this regards.

Would be more concerned that most IMGs can’t ever work as a physician in Canada. There is a slight chance as a family doctor but there is almost no chance as a specialist unless you went to school in the UK, US, SA, Ireland and a few more. If you would like to continue practicing as a physician please do your research about how difficult it will be to get licensed and consider other countries.

Thank you so much for your prompt response.
I will take into consideration the future career aspects. Having said that I wanted to confirm regarding CRS points towards work experience. Since I am in the process of express entry under FSW. Whether or not medical residency (specialist physician noc 3111) for a period of 3 years, full time and paid can claim me points in work experience section?

Don’t think you can claim residency because it is required to become licensed. Will wait and see what others say. If you actually want to practice as a specialist I would look at how many foreign trained doctors actually got a spot to repeat their residency. Not trying to be negative but so many foreign trained dentists, doctors and pharmacists are so focused on immigrating that they aren’t looking at job opportunities in Canada. Most foreign trained doctors never work in Canada. The salaries of foreign trained pharmacists have been cut in half in the past 10 yrs in most cities due to the large volume of Canadian graduates and foreign trained pharmacists and it can be hard to find a job. There are a surplus of dentists in most cities and dentists struggle to set up a practice. If you are willing to start from scratch and find another career then definitely come to Canada but please compare various countries. There are better opportunities for doctors other than immigrating to Canada.

https://www.change.org/p/the-government-of-canada-to-stop-the-sufferings-of-foreign-trained-immigrant-doctors-in-canada ( this was almost a decade ago and the situation has gotten worse because there are more Canadian medical graduates but the same amount of residency spots)

https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/canadian-doctors-educated-abroad-file-lawsuit-say-limits-on-b-c-residency-training-are-unfair (Also looks like Canadians who trained abroad may get preference for the available residency spots after the Canadian trainee students which would eliminate most of the available spots)

Hi Maredia,
I am looking for a similar answer. I did my residency in pathology for 3 years in India. Did you find an answer to it? I don’t know if I can put it as a work experience during immigration or not?
