Visitor record and work permit application

I am a visitor here in canada with my family..recently i applied a paper application for visitor extension ..while my application is in process my wife got a job and permit..now can i apply for an open work permit or i will have to wait for my visitor extension decision as it will take atleast 2 more months..
Please guide me.
