Hi guys,
So I am really confused. I came to Canada Dec 23, 2018. I am allowed to stay until June 23, 2019. on April 17th I applied for a visitor extension (record) until January 23, 2020. So 7 months.

I had a change in status today May 30th 2019, it said I was approved. It sent me a message saying "In Canada Approval Letter".
It read:
Your application to remain in Canada as a temporary resident has been approved. A secure
document has been mailed to you at the address that you provided when you made your
application. If you have not received your secure document within six weeks, contact IRCC .
Type: Permit-VR, Validity: 06/29/2019 and then the document number.
Below that says :
This letter is not valid for travel and is not a permit allowing you to remain in Canada.
Sincerely,
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada
**This is an automatically generated letter and does not require a signature.**
So does that mean they only approved me to stay for an extra 6 days? Do I have to leave Canada on that date? I don't understand. Please help!

Is the document number in the online system the same document number in the letter?

Is there a PDF you can download under "messages"?

I am not too sure, here. I wonder if they sent you the letter to function as an interim thing until a visitor record arrives in the mail.

Yes the document number in the Document status section on my account is the same as the letter in my messages. The letter was a PDF.

Then for now, wait until you get the visitor record in the mail. I have no idea the validity of the visitor record, but it'll say on it.

Wish I could help more!

It says that the letter is not a permit allowing me to remain in Canada. So i'm guessing the secure document being mailed is my record, but is it only approving me for 6 extra days? It makes no sense

Are the dates on the letter the same as the dates shown on the online profile (under document status)? What reasons did you give for extension? May be they feel that you don't need to be in Canada for another 7 months.

Do I have to leave Canada on that date: You can apply for another extension before 29th June.

It is not guaranteed that you will get approval for the number of days you have requested. It depends on how convincing you are to the officer; that you can support yourself financially, you will leave Canada, the purpose of your stay etc. In most cases people ask for 6 months (sometimes more). Not all are approved, and those approved don't often get the days they asked for unfortunately.

yes the dates under documents status and the letter are both the same. If they just approved me why would I have to apply for another extension before June 29th? Thats only 6 days after I was originally supposed to leave. I don't see why they would approve me at all and send me a visitor record if its only for 6 more days.

It might as well have been rejected. It can be very frustrating. You can still apply for another extension if you intend to remain in Canada after 29th June, otherwise you might find yourself living without status. We don't know much about your application as you have not shared much, but there is no rule as to how many days you can get unfortunately. I think the stronger an application is the more probability of getting approval (with more days); Purpose, finances, ability to leave Canada etc
