Hi anyone in BC, who has applied for the MSP after landing. Would like to know how it works for residents who are doing soft landing. For example I plan to do my landing, but my husband plans to do soft landing later and return back home for sometime before doing permanent landing. Should I add him to my application for medical coverage?

Also, I am currently planning to stay at an Airbnb, do I need to give my Airbnb address for the card?

Also it mentions if I travel in next 6 months for more than 30 days it will not be eligible. I am not sure of my travel plans, but may need to travel for more than 30 days. What do I need to do in that case?

Your BC MSP will only become valid after six months of living in the province. If you come in to BC for a soft landing, apply for MSP, and then leave again, you will need to start waiting again the next time you arrive.

Why bother the paperwork now unless you intend to claim MSP when you're not eligible for it?

Hi thank you for replying. I think I wrote it wrong. So my situation is that I am doing landing first and my husband is going to follow in a month or two. He is not going to be staying for long, he needs to leave. I will keep staying here. So when I apply for MSP, should I include him or he needs to do it separately when he does his permanent landing? Does it become valid after 6 months or 3 months?

He should apply when he does his permanent landing. Even if he applied when he did a soft landing, he wouldn't be eligible until he had met the residency requirement. It would be the same as your potential upcoming travel - leaving the province would mean he was no longer eligible.

Thanks a lot for the clarification! Is it ok to give the Airbnb address for the card? I am going to be there for 2 months.

BC MSP wait period is the balance of the month of landing plus 2 months. If a person lands on the 1st of the month, coverage is valid after 3 months. If they land on the 31st of the month, it is valid after 2 months.

If you leave for more than 30 days within that qualifying period, you must inform BC MSP. Your coverage would be cancelled and you would be liable for any charges incurred up to that point.

Thanks. I should know that as a resident of BC. That being said, she can't have her husband soft land and then leave the country, expecting to come back with an active MSP.

No her husband shouldn’t sign up for MSP knowing he has no plans to meet the residency requirement.

Not sure if it like Ontario and you can sign up anytime during the first 2-3 months and coverage start date will remain the same. It is important to notify MSP of your permanent address. Letters from doctors, emergency notification, etc. is based on your health card so it is important to have your permanent address.
