Dear @legalfalcon, can you please help me understand how to check the start date of security screening?
Is it the one in security subactivity or in the notes?

Many thanks.

My spousal application has been more than 15 months. Categorized as 'complex' case, I reckon my application is at the stage of background and security checks apparently due to my previous military service 30 years ago and my previous government employment at a teaching college in China few years ago! Not quite sure if this is correct. How long would it take to complete the background/security checks by CSIS and CBSA -average range of months?
Anyway to find out if this is the scenario so as to ease my worry about the long wait?
There is no set time frame. If your application is in enhanced security screening, then it is. long haul. 6 months to a year is very common.

The security is initiated by CBSA, and then bu CSIS. CSIS will conclude its involvement and send the report to CBSA. The CBSA will then compile the report and send it to IRCC.

To know when CBSA and CSIS started and concluded its involvement, you need CBSA and CSIS notes.

In the GCMS notes the security details are redacted. But this is not always the case. So see if you have security screening listed and the date.
If this is redacted then you will have to see in your CBSA notes.

Usually there are 4 ss activities before the ss is concluded.

The biometrics was made mandatory for applications starting January 2019. If your application is from 2018, then asking for your biometrics is unusual. However, only applicants for a few countries were asked for biometrics prior to 2019.

If you fall in this category, then this is a good sign as it will speed up your security.

I can't give you any specific time frame as it will be mere speculation.

CBSA and CSIS can take long in some case. Average is 1-3 months.
You should order CBSA and CSIS notes to know exactly what is going on with the application.

hi, I have read your comments and they are indeed very valuable.
We have sponsored our parents for immigration back in January 2016. Their background checks are still running since April 2018 and now its been 13 months. Do you know based on your knowledge up to how long this can take? Is there anything we can do to find the latest status?

You mentioned order GCMS notes, but does that also give notes as written maybe by CSIS and CBSA?

Thanks in advance for your help!

So background check is part of security check. If your parents are undergoing a background check it means the security is involved. In this case gcms notes will be of less use.
CSIS and CBSA notes will tell what is going on with the security.
How to order these notes?

Thanks but this is not on the CSIS or CBSA website? I am a bit confused if we order from here, how will the request go to the corresponding agencies?

This website will send you a consent form and file the notes on your behalf, all you need is an Application number and client ID

For applicants over 60 years of age, the security check is very minimal. The senior applicants (parents and grand parents very rarely get stuck in enhanced security screening).

The sponsorship application processing time for parents and grandparents is 20-24 months.

see https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/check-processing-times.html

So you do not need any CBSA / CSIS notes. And there is no point wasting money on them.

The sponsorship application has 2 stages

Stage 1, the sponsor's eligibility is checked, to ensure that they can sponsor.

Stage 2, the eligibility and documents of the person being sponsored is checked.

If you exceed the 20-14 months processing time frame, only then you should consider GCMS notes. To read on GCMS notes, see https://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/threads/all-about-gcms-how-to-order-read-general-questions-answered.482200/

This website will send you a consent form and file the notes on your behalf, all you need is an Application number and client ID
Adding on this is from IRCC website

If we begin to process your application, we’ll:

  • send you an:
    • application number
    • acknowledgment of receipt
  • assess your eligibility as a sponsor
  • assess if the person you’re sponsoring is eligible for permanent residence
The persons you’re sponsoring must send us the additional documents we need.
During processing, we’ll ask the persons you’re sponsoring to submit their:

From the above you can figure out that the process of sponsorship is same. The application will under go Eligibility check, Criminality (Police Certificate) and Security.
Every application which intend to immigrate to Canada under Permanent Resident/Temporary resident/Family sponsorship/H&C etc will have to go through the Security check.

Feel free to write back for any clarity.
