Proof that sponsor visited principal applicant - gas receipts?

Husband (USA) and myself (Canadian) are just starting the PR application process, and I have what feels like a million questions, but it's probably less. But let's start with one, then I'll go from there :)

One of my questions I was hoping y'all be able to help me with is the section where it states that we have to prove that the sponsor (me) visited him - the suggestions on the form are boarding passes, stamps on passports, etc.

Well, the thing is, he only lives an 8 hour drive away and a passport doesn't get stamped when you cross the border - the only thing I can think of would be gas receipts from filling up on the way there and on the way back - is this acceptable? Has anyone encountered a similar problem?

Personal view not sure a gas receipt proves anything could be same as providing a Walmart receipt doesn’t prove anything about the person whose receipt it is.

You could always try requesting entry records from CBSA when he visits Canada

https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/agency-agence/reports-rapports/pia-efvp/atip-aiprp/thr-rav-eng.html

Or CBP records when you enter the US

https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home
And that is my view as well - gas receipts don't prove anything other than US has cheaper gas than here in Canada. But that was my go-to. I'll check it out. Fanks.

EDIT

the CBP website will spit out a record of when and where you entered the country - nothing necessarily "official". Do they need official?

Also, I can't find anything but is this a one-question-per-thread forum, or just go hog and see where it takes me?

No, they don't need it official.

You can ask as many questions on this thread as you want.

No, they don't need it official.

You can ask as many questions on this thread as you want.

Related question - if I visit or if he visits while the application is being processed, a) do we need to keep them updated with the additional crossings and b) how would we do that?

Now for more questions

1) For the additional family information form - Part A where it says spouse - does he put my name or n/a since I'm a Canadian citizen?

2) I haven't completely changed my name yet on everything - driver's license, utilities have my new surname but passport, credit cards, bank account, SIN does not - is this going to throw them for a loop?

3) There was a question on one of the forms, which I can't find now (of course), which asked if the principal applicant was living with someone and what their relationship was - do roommates count?

4) Do the signatures on the forms have to be "printed off and signed" signatures?

5) If I understand the glossary definition for family members: for the purpose of these application it's referring to parents, and if we have any children, correct?

6) If you don't pay the full fee (1040) right away, but pay it later as soon as you can, will the application be delayed and by how much?

7) When mailing in the application, what are some of the "no-no"s? Ie don't bind it, no use of post-it flags to indicate different sections, etc?

8) Use of a representative form: If I want to be able to talk to immigration on behalf of my husband (say I have questions about whatever might be happening on his side), IF he makes me his representative, that means all the info, everything will go to me, right? But what if we don't want that, we just want the ability to ask our questions directly - do we have to fill out a form?

9) Does he, as a US citizen, have to submit biometrics? The website has no definitive answers to this.

10) any documentation, ie birth certificate, that has to be submitted but is not in english, needs to have a certified translation right? What's the best way to do this?

11) Proof of relationship, not living together: it asks for a max of 10 pages of proof that the sponsor and principal applicant communicated with each other - can we squish (as long as they're legible) as many screenshots of these various interactions on a page? Is there a preferred layout/size? We have 6 (!) years of proof to condense into 10 pages, which is why I'm asking.

12) Proof of relationship, relationship recognized by friends/family: acceptable would be screen shots of our facebook pages showing our relationship status? And what kinds of letters from friends and family? Are there examples somewhere?

13) proof of relationship: there's "fill it out" box at the bottom of the form asking if we have any other proof that our relationship is genuine - I was talking to a former coworker who had also sponsored his wife to be a PR and he mentioned providing receipts from the wedding - is this a good idea? What have other people put?

I think that's all the questions I have for now - maybe I'm overthinking this too much. Either way, I sincerely appreciate any (good) information y'all can provide.

Have you made any purchases there except for gas? like restaurants or drugstores? If you found any trace on your credit card bills that can prove you used it in US that will work too, highlight the part you want to use as proof and write a mini explanation next to it.

I just pulled the border crossing record online on the US website and printed that. And a copy of the airplane ticket receipt. It seemed like it was sufficient enough.

I thought of that too - typically my spending tends to be minimal, as to account for the exchange rate (somehow in the 6 years of this relationship i never once thought of getting a US chequing account ). I'm sure there's something from restaurants, drug stores I could use as well - not to mention having to pay for luggage on Spirit Airlines (NEVER AGAIN!).

a) No.

1. Your name.

2. You need to use the name in your passport in the application. It isn't an issue.

3. Yes.

4. Actual signatures, yes.

5. https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/application-forms-guides/guide-5289-sponsor-your-spouse-common-law-partner-conjugal-partner-dependent-child-complete-guide.html#family

6. Yes, there can be a delay if IRCC has to request the RPRF fee. Maybe a few weeks, maybe more. No one can say for sure, as it depends on your app and the VO processing it.

7. See Step 5 of the guide.

8. He would need to authorize you as his rep if you want to speak on his behalf.

9. Yes.

10. Yes. See the translation requirements in the guide.

11. There is no preferred layout. Quality over quantity.

12. Screenshots are fine. There is no letter template, as it should be in the person's own words.

Don't bother with receipts. Just send the border history.

EDIT: Never mind, i figured it out. It was at the top of the document (can we request that webpage as a PDF?). But my questions are still the same.

I do have one more question: this is what confused us at the beginning of the sponsor form question 1: if you're found ineligible to sponsor, indicate whether you want to: a) withdraw your sponsorship application or b) proceed with application for permanent residence.

Then I found this on the website:

Sponsors
After we receive your application, we’ll check to make sure you’ve submitted all the required forms and documents on the document checklist. If your application package is incomplete, it will be returned to you without being processed. If the application has all the requested forms and documents, you’ll get an email or letter confirming that the application has been accepted for processing.

We’ll assess your eligibility to sponsor and you’ll also get an email or letter advising you of the decision.

  • If your sponsorship undertaking is approved, we’ll send the application for permanent residence to the appropriate processing office for further review.
  • If your sponsorship undertaking is refused, you’ll get an email or letter explaining why.
    • If you choose to go ahead with the sponsorship even if you are found ineligible to sponsor, the whole application package will be sent to a processing office for further review.
Why would they continue with the sponsorship even if you, the sponsor, is ineligible to sponsor? Who would sponsor the person? Is this here incase you're co-sponsoring someone? How would they continue with the permanent residence application if there's no sponsor? is there a right choice here?

hi there!
I'm an American being sponsored by a Canadian spouse.

----
Related question - if I visit or if he visits while the application is being processed, a) do we need to keep them updated with the additional crossings and b) how would we do that?
Don't worry about keeping it updated after you submit the application.

1) For the additional family information form - Part A where it says spouse - does he put my name or n/a since I'm a Canadian citizen?
yes- use both of your information here and birthplaces here.

2) I haven't completely changed my name yet on everything - driver's license, utilities have my new surname but passport, credit cards, bank account, SIN does not - is this going to throw them for a loop?
make sure to address/specify this in a cover letter. you will also be listing your maiden name and other names you've used in the documents. They should be able to put it together, though. this won't be the first time. :)

3) There was a question on one of the forms, which I can't find now (of course), which asked if the principal applicant was living with someone and what their relationship was - do roommates count?
I would assume that they mean in a romantic relationship? a roommate probably wouldn't need to be listed.

4) Do the signatures on the forms have to be "printed off and signed" signatures?
yes- they need to be printed off and signed.
However: one of the forms needs to have the PA's name TYPED and then signed (I think it's the application to Canada?)

5) If I understand the glossary definition for family members: for the purpose of these application it's referring to parents, and if we have any children, correct?
It is also to include his siblings, as you might both wish to sponsor them later on. if you do not list them, they can never be sponsored.

6) If you don't pay the full fee (1040) right away, but pay it later as soon as you can, will the application be delayed and by how much?
yes, it can be delayed. there's always a delay in between the time that they send a message, you reply, and then when they can get back to processing your file. for example, it takes ~40 days for them to acknowledge the receipt of the application. I'm not sure if it'll be that long, but if you're in a rush I wouldn't chance it.

7) When mailing in the application, what are some of the "no-no"s? Ie don't bind it, no use of post-it flags to indicate different sections, etc?
don't staple things together. use paperclips or rubber bands. Stack everything in the order that it is requested.

I believe that use of a representative is for if you are using a lawyer?

9) Does he, as a US citizen, have to submit biometrics? The website has no definitive answers to this.
YES- he must submit biometrics. I'm a US citizen. just completed mine on Friday. it was easy peasy.

10) any documentation, ie birth certificate, that has to be submitted but is not in english, needs to have a certified translation right? What's the best way to do this?
unsure

11) Proof of relationship, not living together: it asks for a max of 10 pages of proof that the sponsor and principal applicant communicated with each other - can we squish (as long as they're legible) as many screenshots of these various interactions on a page? Is there a preferred layout/size? We have 6 (!) years of proof to condense into 10 pages, which is why I'm asking.
I printed off a bunch of emails, a few screen shots from chat conversations, etc. i tried to include some silly stuff, as well as emails to and from his parents. We also included lots of rental car receipts, train tickets, etc. since I drive my car to see him and my passport doesn't get stampled, I addressed this in the cover letter.

12) Proof of relationship, relationship recognized by friends/family: acceptable would be screen shots of our facebook pages showing our relationship status? And what kinds of letters from friends and family? Are there examples somewhere?
I had my sister and mother in-law write us letters. I drafted the letters and they made edits. I described how we met, how we interact, etc. additionally, I attached pictures of us with our friends (some at the wedding, some throughout the years).

I used this box as opportunity to describe our relationship, how we've been there for one another over the years, etc.

hopefully this helps--- we got Sponsorship Approval immediately.

The continue option is if they have H&C grounds that they want considered. The correct option is to withdraw.

3. They mean anyone the person is living with.

5. Siblings can't be sponsored. https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/application-forms-guides/guide-5289-sponsor-your-spouse-common-law-partner-conjugal-partner-dependent-child-complete-guide.html#family

8. Not just for a lawyer. It is for anyone who want to act as a rep, including the spouse.
