I have received the Mitacs Globalink internship in (British Columbia) Canada , for three months (mid may to August).

I have applied for a TRV Visa ( will request a Global Skills Strategy permit that allows me to work for 120 days or less in Canada), with all the forms plus my father's bank statement having 15000 CAD, his redeemable mutual funds as proof of funds.
I have also produced a No Objection Certificate, report cards from my home institution.

I have also produced my letter of acceptance (without the funding details).

There was also a letter of undertaking by my father, stating to pay for my expenses
However, I have received a rejection letter stating that:
As per IRPR paragraph 179(b)
1) poor travel history (I haven't travelled to abroad before)

2) weak family ties to both home country and Canada

3) based on your personal assets and financial status.

My dad is a pensioner getting around 600 CAD as pension every month.

After the rejection,I have received an official award letter from Mitacs stating to provide me with 8000 CAD once I return to Canada.

I also have booked the flight tickets, after my rejection as the prices were getting pretty high.

My dadad bank statement now shows an amount of 9000 CAD, as we had to use some money after the time of rejection.
  • How can I improve my application so that I can address the above and get an approval?

Very big thanks in advance folks, see ya.

Unfortunately, you have been correctly refused. The funding for your visit (which is research work) should come from the Canadian university and not from your dad.

Also, the refusal is reasonable considering your dad is a pensioner who gets CAD 600 a month. Now, if he has to pay for your visit, airfare, etc by withdrawing from his meagre finances then it does not make financial sense.

Even with a stipend of CAD 8,000 from the university, you will likely not be able to cover the costs of your visit/stay, airfare, etc. for a stay of up to four months.

What also does not make sense is the sharp drop in your dad's finances from CAD 15,000 to CAD 9,000 should you reapply

I have also shown them a redeemable mutual funds of about 30000 CAD, which were not locked and could be redeemed anytime my father wishes.

The sharp drop in his bank statement finances are because, he invested that money in locked capital gain bonds as we got that money after selling that property.

The statement I have shown them was actually taken 10 days before the date of application. So this sharp has occurred after I have taken the statement.

I now have booked the air tickets as well. Hope that helps !

You're missing the point. Your dad should not be the person who pays for any component of your visit.

On the contrary, your university should pay for your entire stay and airfare. Under normal circumstances, this research program would have required a work permit and not a TRV. However, due to recent changes, you have the option of carrying out research as a visitor if specific conditions are met.

It is not advisable to make significant transactions when a visa is being processed. The visa office has the rights to contact your dad's bankers to inquire about the funds available.

Tickets do not guarantee visas and are not advisable before visas are granted. You can certainly reapply if you wish

That's some really useful info, thanks a lot.
However, my friends have got the same visa approved by showing their parent's savings (which was around 9000 CAD and the income they have shown was around 60000 INR) and the same stipend.

However, as you insist that parent's financial support doesn't really matter that much, is there any other thing that I could do differently this time?

Edit : I would be staying for 90 days exactly. So it's three months.

Appreciate the help!

I'm not insisting on anything. Guess your friends were lucky.

Each case is unique. What works for someone else, may/may not work for another applicant

That is true

As I have stated, that the internship is for three months, and now I have the stipend and the acceptance letters, will it make any difference for me if I reapply for the Visa now?

Thanks in advance

One last question before I go,

Is showing redeemable mutual funds as additional Proof Of Funds, a good thing or should I avoid it?

Thanks again!

The advice remains the same for any visa application:
Why would someone redeem the mutual funds to pay for a visit abroad considering it was invested with a certain set of financial goals in mind? Liquid finances (easily available) is what one would use.

Nonetheless, you can include it in your new application + a Letter of Financial Support from your dad

That makes complete sense, thanks.
