Why interview? does anyone know the reason?

In order to grant you permanent residence, you must provide us with satisfactory original identity documents. All applicants must provide their original valid passport at the landing interview. You must attend the interview with the following:  Your own interpreter, if required  Your Sponsor (only if applying under the Family Class application)  2 Photos for each person on this application (no photo of sponsor needed) taken within the last 12 months - see enclosed appendix for specifications  Proof of current employment or termination of welfare benefits (for independent or sponsored persons onlyincluding Live-in Caregivers)  All documents issued to you by Citizenship and Immigration Canada

Nothing to worry. For some of inland applicants they schedule landing interview which is actually better than sending passport to them to get COPR, in my point of view. Congrats again.

Usually not.For outland applicants, they issue PPR.

Guys my WP expires on May 1st. I have a journey ahead for March break and would be back on March 29th.
so I have basically 32 days left on my WP expiration when I am re-entering Canada. would that be Ok or better to apply for wp extension before I leave Canada? I believe a decision must be made until May otherwise apply to renew it Mid of April. not from now as We are 2 people and it costs +$600 just for the wp extension.

My wife's and my permits will expire on Apr 30. I had similar concern and so I already applied for BOWP.

However, I don't think you would get refused to re-enter Canada just because of 32 days left in your visa. If you're a super cautious person (like me), you better apply it. This will give you peace of mind.

BTW, it costs 510$!

I would do more research on this before making decision. I think legally there is no problem if you come back and then apply because as you said you have 30+ days and that is more than enough to apply for a new one or decide to leave Canada. So, the officer at the border will not have any problem with you entering (given the validity of your visa).

But, if you apply for a new work permit before you leave, there is a special circumstance that you can't work when you come back to Canada until the time that they make decision on your application. What I mean is that by law, if you apply for a new WP, and the old one expires, you can still work in Canada under something called implied status, subject to the fact that you remain in Canada. The reason is that if you stay in Canada, implied status can maintain your last "status", which was worker, until a decision is made on the new application. However, if you leave the country during the time that your old one expires, since you left the country, you will lose the "status", and if you come back to Canada (given that you had TRV to enter), you can stay in Canada under implied status until a decision is made. The difference is that implied status will refer you back to the time that you lost your status. In that case, even though you applied for new permit and you can stay in Canada, but you can't work anymore until the decision is made on the new one

Also, I understand that your old one is valid even after you come back to Canada.So, a question that I have and I don't know is that when implied status begins? If it begins only after the time that old one expires, the above law will not affect you since you will come back to Canada during the validity of the old one. But, if the implied status starts immediately after you apply for new one, then the above rule will take effect.

The current processing time of work permit is 83 days on average. So, if you apply now, you might get it around May 1st. But, it might get a little longer and pass the time that your old permit expires.

Lastly, the other option that you have is to go out and upon your arrival, you apply for the new WP at the port of entry. I have seen people who does that so they can get their permit faster. The good point of this method is that the officer will check your docs and will issue your new permit right away (no processing time anymore), given that you have all the necessary docs with you. However, do more research on this option as well, I heard it might be a little risky

Here they defined implied status as

This gives me the feeling that it starts after you apply.

From this, it is clearly mentioned that the travel shouldn't be after the expiry.

All in all, I tend to agree with the second link more as it is the law itself (bebin chikar mikonid ba ma ha, majboor shodam beram matne sarihe ghanoone asasi ra bekhonam )

I already applied for the work permit. I had to do so for several other reasons, but the info @Mr_nobody and you are providing is very informative
