So I should wait till close to my departure date before applying again?

How am I allowed to stay till I get an answer? I was again told that I must leave when my visitor visa ends, whether I was given an answer on my application or not. I still have to leave. I was told if I stay past the date I was given, this is over staying and I would be in big trouble, which I absolutely do not want.

Again, whoever you have been talking to you has been giving you very bad advice and doesn't understand Canada's immigration rules. As long as you apply to extend your stay before the end of your allowed visit, you have implied status and can remain in Canada until a decision in the extension is made.

Wow, I really have been given bad information.
I was told that I had to leave on the date I was given and if I had applied for an extended stay, I still had to leave on the date stamped in my passport, even if I was not given a final decision yet.
To remain in country would be overstaying and I would be in trouble.
I truly am flabbergasted. The person I asked seemed to know what they were talking about.

Don't take any further advice from them on immigration matters.
