Hello all I was just trying to get a little more info, my boyfriend Is from Hong Kong and is looking to apply to extend his working holiday visa to carry him over from the end of it which is dec 28th 2018 to March 18th 2018. I know his application will likely be rejected but would he likely have enough time to make it? Reason we ask is because that date of March is when we can submit an application for commmon law. Just wondering if y’all have any information. Thank you

You can't extend IEC. What he can do is switch to visitor status before his IEC ends then remain in Canada until you can apply for common law. He will be able to add an OWP application with the inland common law application. He should get that in 4 months. As long as your application isn't returned due to an error he will be on implied status and no reason to apply to extend his visitor status. If he hadn't received AOR before his 6 month visitor status ends he should apply for a visitor extension so he remains in status in Canada.

He doesn't qualify for a work permit extension. If he applies for one, his application will be returned as incomplete and he will be in Canada without status (i.e. illegally) as of the date his IEC expired. Also, any work he did after his IEC expiry will be classified as work without authorization. As said above, he needs to apply to change his status to visitor and has to stop working as soon as his IEC expires.
