Ontario Photo ID

has anyone applied for Ontario photo ID without surrendering a foreign license? As long as you’re not licensed in Canada to drive, shouldn’t one be able to obtain an Ontario photo ID?

Ontario photo ID has nothing to do with driver's licence.

If you plan on living in Ontario - that is, you will be a permanent resident living in Ontario - you need to get an Ontario driver's licence within 60 days of moving to Ontario.

Hence you cannot have both.

In Alberta, if you have a foreign licence, you have to turn it in for the photo ID as well. I assume all provinces are the same.

Here in Ontario you don't have to give your foreign licence. The only thing is that you are not allowed to drive using it after 60 days of landing or after you obtain the Ontario G1 licence (whichever occurs first). In my case, I obtained the G1 and then the full G licence within my first 60 days here, and I still have my foreign licence, which I can use in my birth country, because it is still valid.

I know people who applied for Ontario Photo IDs and they were asked to surrender their foreign driver's licences, even if they were expired...they actually kept their active licences. The officer was OK to take the expired licences.
They then surrendered the photo IDs when they applied for their G1 licences.

I bypassed the Photo ID, and I too was not asked to surrender my foreign licence when I applied for my Ontario licence.
